Is the Canadian legal stance towards online poker likely to change, or is it stable?
It’s very stable. There are no politicians campaigning against online poker in Canada and no bills being proposed which might impact Canadian rights to play poker freely. There are is also no immediate threat to the current laws with regards to taxation and poker.
The only potential for issue is that offshore online poker rooms are not openly welcomed to operate there in the wording of Canada’s laws, but they aren’t outlawed either. In fact, they are free to advertise openly across most of Canada, with only exception being Ontario.
Who are the most famous Canadian online poker players?
In terms of famous players, Daniel Negreanu tops the live list, but not the online one. Sam Greenwood has seen prolonged success online under the screen name “Str8$$$Homey” on Pokerstars and various names on other sites. He has accumulated over $6.8 million in online cashes over the years and has won a SCOOP and a WCOOP title. More recently he has moved into the live High Roller circuit, but he remains one of Canada’s greatest online talents.
Mike “Timex” McDonald became famous for his live results later in his career, but started out playing online, racking up a total of $3.2 million in cashes during his online career. In later years, he became the youngest EPT champion ever, winning EPT Dortmund in 2008, but most of his career success has been online.
Timothy “Tim0thee” Adams could easily be considered a live poker player more than an online one, with over $10.5 million in live winnings, mostly from High Roller tournaments. However, he has at least $2 million in online cashes, and with only two screen names listed on PocketFives, he may well have more, which is enough to give him a mention as one of Canada’s top online players.
