Footballing world cup winner and Brazilian legend Denilson, has become the latest in a lengthening line of professional sports stars to sign for online poker rooms. Once the player with the biggest ever transfer fee, Denilson was always an extraordinary player, and a pivotal cog in the machine that was the 2002 Brazilian world cup winning squad. He will from now represent 888poker.
“All my friends started to play poker and so I got more and more interested in the game”, said Denilson in a press conference. “Many of the qualities you need to be a successful footballer can help you improve your poker game.”
“888poker is one of the biggest and best platforms in the world, so I am very proud to be joining their team. I hope my time here will help me develop my own poker skills as well as encourage new players to get involved in this exciting game.”
A global trend
The grand plan for online poker rooms across the industry is of course to gather many top sportsmen and women into the fold, to help the reputation of poker, and see it accepted as something akin to a global sport. The industry leaders want to encourage the influx of new recreational player however they can, because those players are the foundation of poker, and global stars playing poker seems a good place to start. The pioneers in this regard, have of course been PokerStars, who have signed the great Brazilian player of the same era, Ronaldo. They have also signed arguably the greatest player of his current generation, Cristiano Ronaldo, along with many other sports stars, including tennis star, Rafa Nadal. There can be little doubt that this is an effective long term strategy for helping new players to recognise poker in the correct light, and we can expect more sports signings to follow, when it comes to major online poker rooms.
