A colorful bag of new champions minted at the 52nd World Series of Poker. The biggest winner was Daniel Cates at the $50K Poker Players Championship 6-Handed. Cates denied series winner/ 3x bracelet winner Ryan Leng to lock up his first ever gold bracelet and have his name etched on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy. Another impressive achievement was by Josh Arieh who captured his second series win/ fourth career bracelet and moved up to second rank in the WSOP Player of the Year race. The other two winners were Greek pro Georgios Sotiropoulos who won his third career bracelet and Eric Zhang for his first bracelet at the SALUTE to Warriors event. At the WSOP.com Online bracelet events, John “Relevancy” Ripnick snagged his first career bracelet. We’ve got those stories down below.

Event #60: $50,000 Poker Players Championship 6-Handed – DANIEL CATES – US$ 954,020

On the final day of Event #60: $50,000 Poker Players Championship 6-Handed, with only five players remaining, the highly colorful and intense high roller Daniel Cates came out dressed in battle gear and hair dyed green, ready to claim ownership of the title and bracelet. Thirteen hours later, he did just that. Cates defeated Ryan Leng at heads up to capture his first ever WSOP gold bracelet and a series career high payout of US$ 954,020. In an interview with PokerNews, Cates said,

“I said I was gonna win, so I won. But it was pretty important because now I have more money to help the world and to continue a career outside of poker”

Despite having an outstanding portfolio of nearly US$ 10 Million in live earnings, this was only his third ever WSOP cash. As one of the most well known super high rollers, Cates’s prior achievements include a couple of wins at the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series and at the World Poker Tour. He has two seven figure payouts, the largest was at the 2014 European Poker Tour Monte Carlo Super High Roller for US$ 1.77M.

Recapping his latest victory, the event is considerably the most coveted title amongst the elite with nine varying games in rotation. 63 signed up for a prize pool of US$ 3,016,125. 5x bracelet winner Michael Mizrachi won this event three times but failed to reach the money this time around. Other players missing the money were 5x bracelet winners Shaun Deeb and Brian Rast (2016 PPC event winner), 4x winner Anthony Zinno, and 2019 WSOP POY winner Robert Campbell to name a few. For 6x bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, he cashed out in 9th place. At the final table 3x bracelet winner Ryan Leng, 4x bracelet winner/ Poker Hall of Fame Eli Elezra, and ring winner Matt Glantz were back for their third finals showing, and 3x bracelet winner Josh Arieh was on his second final table.

The race to the gold was no easy ride for Cates who experienced multiple sharp spikes along the way. At the fall of Elezra to Paul Volpe, the three handed round saw the chip lead exchange corners as each player – Cates, Leng, Volpe – earned their time up top. At one point, Cates dropped to as low as 5 BB then recovered, eventually climbing to the top building a commanding chip lead. Cates finished off Volpe in 3rd place to enter heads up on a 5:1 advantage over Leng. For the second time, Leng was seeking his second win in this series having been denied at Event #30: $1,500 MONSTER STACK No Limit Hold’em. However, Leng could not penetrate Cates’sbig stack and had to settle for runner up once again. Cates drained Leng at Hold’em variant to win his first ever gold bracelet. He became the 13th player to have his name engraved on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

Big win for WSOP newcomer Eric Zhang who bested a field of 1,738 entries at Event #63: $500 SALUTE to Warriors NL Hold’em. Zhang pocketed the US$ 102,465 first prize and his first ever gold bracelet. In fact, this was his first known live tournament cash. Interviewed by PokerNews, Zhang expressed,

“Every day waking up it felt like surreal. I would never have thought I would make it this far. I actually had a flight to leave Vegas this morning so I rebooked everything! I’m going to remember this forever and I’ll definitely come back next year to play more events.”

To capture the win, Zhang maintained his big stack throughout the final table and faced Bradley Rogoff for the title. The all ins came fairly quick with Zhang ahead AhQs over Ad7d. Both paired their kicker card for a higher spread to Zhang. Other notable players in the money were Korea’s Chulhan Choi in 4th place and two time ring winner Mitch Garshofsky in 5th place. Other Asian players in the top 100 were Seokyoung Lee (21st), Toru Tamiguchi (55th), Seongmin Lee (85th), and Seongsu Kong (100th). First victory for Greece at the series with Georgios Sotiropoulos outlasting 3,820 players at the $1,000 MINI Main Event No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. This was Sotiropoulos’third career bracelet having won his first at the 2015 WSOPE and second at the 2021 WSOP Online [International]. Along with the shine, Sotiropoulos cashed in US$ 432,575 to bump up his total series career earnings over a million to US$ 1,261,262. Outside of the WSOP, Sotiropoulos has multiple wins around the world however his biggest career score was for runner up at the EPT Prague Main Event for US$ 959,245. Interviewed by PokerNews, Sotiropoulos was ecstatic,

“It feels amazing. So many players in the tournament, 3,000 or so. So many hours played. And in the end, the result was what I wanted. I really love the World Series of Poker, Las Vegas, the tournaments, the people here. Everything excites me. Makes me come again and again, playing more and winning more. Feeling grateful.”

Unlike the champion, for runner up Japan’s Wataru Miyashita, this may well have been his series debut. This was his first series cash and a sizable one of US$ 267,238. Miyashita became the second player from Japan to miss the gold by one spot. Earlier in the series, Kosei Ichinose also fell short in second place. Apart from Miyashita, a long list of Asian players reached the money round, in the top 100 were Jeonggyu Cho (17th), Eunyoung Choi (19th), Hsuan-Chao Chen (21st), Nana Sanechika (30th), Yusuku Kuwahata (40th), Daegeon Shon (61st), Inkyu Choi (62nd), bracelet winner Kartik Ved (77th), and Koji Takagi (100th).

To capture the win, Sotiropoulos had to overcome a few ring winners at the final table, Erkut Yilmaz, David Tuthill, and Jordan Meltzer. Everyone at the round was seeking their first gold bracelet. Sotiropoulos caught a lucky break when he was all in with Qh3h that turned into a full house against Meltzer’s Qc10c on a board 3s5h3c4h4s. From there, he continued to climb, railing Tuthill in 7th place. For Miyashita, he knocked out James Rubinski (5th), James Patterson (4th), and Meltzer (3rd) to go head to head against Sotiropoulos for the title. At the kick off, both players were at par. Miyashita was the first to surge. Sotiropoulos challenged back and from there, he went on to claim the title with a flush over trips.
