The World Poker Tour is one of the leading global televised gaming and entertainment brands with more than 20 years of history in the live poker scene. Founded in the United States back in 2002, it has since embarked on a journey to host poker events in more than 50 different countries, the only brand in the industry so far to do so.
In 2009, the WPT was acquired by online gambling giant PartyGaming before forming an alliance with with Ourgame five years later. The brand was sold to Ourgame in 2015 before the most recent change in ownership took place in 2021 when Element Partners purchased the WPT for USD $105 million. Alongside the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour, it is one of the most prominent and well-known brands in the world of poker on a global scale.
Since the inception of the tour, WPT Live Events have been broadcasted in more than 150 countries and territories while live-stream action with cards-up coverage and commentary is also available regularly. The brand offers different levels of competition for players all over the world. In the WPT Main Tour stops, the buy-ins range between $3,500 and $25,000 while the WPT Prime circuit focuses on the mid-stakes with buy-ins worth around $1,100 or the equivalent in local currency.
Since 2022, the brand has been hosting the WPT World Championship at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas just prior to the Christmas period. It has become the richest stop with the largest prize pool and Dan Sepiol emerged with the largest cash prize in a WPT event for $5,282,954 back in 2023.
