My journey in the world of poker (and later casino, sportsbetting) started more than 20 years ago, when I first attended a low-stakes live tournament. I’ve never looked back since, and have been active in several fields, including being a poker player, a live tournament director, writing online and offline articles about poker, and managing the localization of one of the world's largest online poker rooms. Poker is my home ground, I could never imagine doing a job that is not a part of it. I hope someday I’ll have more time to play live; that's something I've missed in the past few years. A game where luck meets skill - what would be more interesting?
Shawn Sheikhan prison release during WSOP 2026
Many wonder, if Shawn Sheikhan will show up at any WSOP 2026 event after his release on 4th June

The much-talked-about Shawn Sheikhan prison release is finally happening. Longtime poker player Shahram “Shawn” Sheikhan will be a free man again on June 4, 2026.

This date is incredibly important because it will happen at the very beginning of the 2026 WSOP . Fans and fellow players are already wondering if we will see him back at the tables. After spending time in a federal facility and a halfway house, Sheikhan is finally closing a very tough chapter of his life.

“Sheiky,” as he is affectionately known by many in the community, served just over half of his original sentence. He recently moved to a Residential Reentry Management facility in Phoenix, Arizona, to finish his time.

Why Was Poker Player Shawn Sheikhan Incarcerated?

To fully understand the story, we have to look back at why poker player Shawn Sheikhan went to prison in the first place. In November 2023, he was sentenced to 48 months behind bars. This harsh penalty was due to his deep involvement in an illegal cannabis business.

From 2019 to 2022, Sheikhan and an accomplice ran a massive unlicensed marijuana wholesale operation in Southern California. The business was creatively dubbed “Cannaland” by its operators. Authorities eventually raided their Spring Valley location in April 2021.

During that raid, police seized over 3,000 pounds of marijuana and five firearms. Sheikhan initially faced up to 40 years in prison for his role in the illegal cannabis business. However, he struck a deal and pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute marijuana in 2022.

The illegal cannabis business also cost him heavily in the wallet. On top of his jail time, he willingly forfeited nearly $300,000 in cash and casino chips.

What’s Next After the Shawn Sheikhan Prison Release?

The upcoming Shawn Sheikhan prison release does not mean he is completely off the hook with the law. After leaving his Arizona halfway house, he will immediately begin three years of supervised release. This means he has a strict set of rules to follow.

For instance, he cannot illegally possess any controlled substances or associate with known criminals. Any major violation could send him right back into federal custody. Still, this early release is a massive relief for the poker veteran.

Will We See Him at the 2026 WSOP?

With his freedom arriving on June 4, the timing is absolutely perfect for the 2026 WSOP. Poker player Shawn Sheikhan actually has a very rich history at the World Series of Poker . In fact, he has six WSOP final table appearances and 14 cashes to his name.

If he decides to play at the 2026 WSOP, the events will take place at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas . His last cash at the WSOP was in 2021, the final year before the tournament moved to the Strip. Many are curious if he still has the skills and the bankroll to compete at the highest level.
