Sergei Korzhenko Comes Out On Top Of Flight B of the VND 25 Billion GTD APT Main Event

Flight B of the VND 36M APT Main Event has concluded with 204 entries (156 unique) generated following six 45-minute and four 60-minute levels, with 66 players bagging up their chips and coming back for Day 2 on Thursday, Nov. 14th.

Russia's Sergei Korzhenko sits at the top of the leaderboard after consistently chipping up throughout the day. He will start Day 2 with 372,300 chips. For a few levels of the day, he could be observed engaging in exciting battles with fellow big stack Nang Quang Nguyen who was sitting on his left.

The Vietnamese professional, with over USD 1 million in live earnings, ended the day second in chips, bagging 323,000. The podium of Flight B was completed by the China's Kaihua Huang with 306,200 chips. Huang continued the great run he is having here at APT Phu Quoc after winning Event #11 Super Hyper Turbo, and finishing in 4th place in Event #28 Tick Tock Boom!.

Kannapong Thanarattrakul

One player who will certainly be excited for Day 2 of the Main Event is Vietnam's own Pham Thanh Nghia. In one of the last hands of the day his pocket queens helped him to finish with 235,600, which puts him into the top 10 chip counts.

A nationality that will be represented well on Day 2 is Thailand with ten players in Flight B making it through. Both Phanlert Sukonthachartnant (171,300), and Kannapong Thanarattrakul (152,200) are two players to look out for on Thursday, sitting in #4 and #2 respectively on the Thailand All-Time Money List.

Other notables to make it through include Singapore's The Naing (139,500), Australia's Yita Choong (121,000), Cypriot bracelet winner Georgios Skarparis (97,100), Sweden's Mikael Andersson (88,800), and the Philippines' David Erquiaga (43,800).

Action picked up with Kannapong Thanarattrakul all-in for 60,000 on a completed board: 2♦ T♥ A♠ 6♥ 8♦ , with nearly 40,000 already in the pot. Long Zhentao was deep in thought as the tournament director announced that only five hands remained before the end of the day. After careful consideration, Zhentao decided to fold, left with almost his starting stack.

With everyone eager to build their chip stacks before the day concluded, Thanarattrakul pushed the action further on the third-to-last hand. On a turn of T♥ 8♦ 9♠ J♣ , Thanarattrakul bet the pot for 11,000, and Tran Ahn called.

Then on the river, 2♠ , Thanarattrakul moved all-in with a 60,000-chip tower in the middle, forcing Ahn to make a decision. Ahn took his time, scrutinizing his hand, glancing at Thanarattrakul, trying to decipher what his opponent might be holding. After some thought, Ahn made the call.

On the 4♣ turn Nghia bet 16,000 which Yoon called. The 2♦ river went without action.

Andersson led out with 9,000 on the flop of 7♦ 2♥ 7♥ which Quang Nguyen called.

Slowing a bit, on the turn 6♠ , Andersson checked allowing Quang Nguyen to shove all-in for his tournament life, which Andersson called.

The action heated up on the turn, 8♣ , when Quang Nguyen fired 9,000 into the pot. Nang Nguyen responded with a dramatic all-in shove for nearly 300,000, forcing Quang Nguyen to go all-in himself, putting his tournament life at risk.

The turn brought the T♣ and faster than a cheetah on caffeine Pearce jammed all-in for 28,000. The Thai player did allow himself some time before he made the call.

Big Stacks Collide Blind Versus Blind

It folded all the way around to the Russian Sergei Korzhenko in the small-blind who opened up the action against Nang Nguyen in the big-blind. The Vietnamese player responded with a three-bet to 8,000. The Russian called and the flop came down T♣ 8♦ 6♣ . Both players checked.

On the A♥ turn Korzhenko checked once more and Nguyen bet out 2,500. The small-blind raised to 11,000 and Nguyen called.

The river 5♦ went without any action again. Korzhenko let out a small outcry of disappointment as he tabled his 6♠ 6♦ for a flopped set. Nguyen showed A♣ Q♣ for a missed flush draw and top pair.

This could have gone much worse for either player, especially considering both players had huge stacks.

It folded around to Minjae Kwon on the button who opened to 1,700. The Chinese player, Chunhui Ji, seated next to him, three-bet to 6,500 and Kwon called.

On a board of K♣ 4♠ 2♦ Ji continued with a 3,700 continuation bet. Kwon, who started the hand with around 35,000, called.

The turn brought the 9♦ and Ji did not slow down, instead he made it 11,000 which was enough pressure for Kwon to fold his hand.

Zhouqun Zhang opened for 1,800 and got two callers, in Wade Gillett on the button and Victor Daccach in middle position, to see a flop. The dealer dealt 9♣ 5♣ K♥

Gillett and Daccach checked to Zhang who continued with 2,000. Both players called. The turn 7♠ was checked by the trio, leading the dealer to display the river of 8♠ . Daccach and Zhang checked to the button who shot out 7,000. Dacach called, Zhang folded.

Gillet showed 9♥ 6♥ for mid-pair on the flop that turned into a straight on the river. Daccach defeated, still showed his hand of J♣ 9♠ and thanked the dealer for the board.

The dealer spread the flop: T♦ J♦ T♥ , and all players checked. On the turn, 2♦ , the action was passed back to Choi, who bet 1,600. Kiourntzidis and Kim folded, but Tan and Jang stayed in the hand to see the river.

With only a quarter of his starting stack remaining, Nguyen Tan Phuong needed a double-up to stay alive in the tournament.

Phuong opened under-the-gun for 900 and was called by Bharti Harsh in the big blind. The flop came down 2♣ 9♠ 2♠ .

Phuong checked to Harsh, who bet 300. Phuong called, and both players checked the K♦ turn. On the river, the 6♦ fell, and Phuong let Harsh lead out with a 1,200-chip bet.

Phuong then raised to 4,900. Harsh called, only to see Phuong reveal a boat—three deuces and two sixes—crushing Harsh’s hand. Harsh mucked, and Phuong scooped the pot with a smile.

A couple of hands later, Dinh Tien Thanh opened to 700 in middle position and received three calls—Harsh on the button, Nguyen Tan Phuong in the small blind, and Mikael Andersson in the big blind.

The excitement is building as we kick off this morning’s session with the second opening flight of VND 36,000,000 APT Main Event, with a substantial guaranteed prize pool of VND 25,000,000,000.

Play gets underway at 11:00 am local time. Players start off with 40,000 in chips and play through six 45-minute levels and four 60-minute levels. The blinds begin at 100/100, with a 100 big blind ante. A 15-minute break will take place after every two levels. Registration remains open until 8:30 pm local time.
