Canada has firmly established itself as a major global poker hub, shaped by a regulatory system that varies from province to province. Long known for producing elite professionals, the country’s gaming landscape is now largely defined by Ontario’s segregated market and Alberta’s 2026 move toward a similar private iGaming model.

Canada: The Provincial Regulatory Framework

• The Ontario Exception: Since April 2022, Ontario has operated its own regulated iGaming market under iGaming Ontario (iGO). Unlike the rest of Canada, players in Ontario must use bespoke platforms (like PokerStars.on) and are generally limited to playing against others within the province, though a November 2025 Court of Appeal ruling has cleared the path for future international liquidity sharing.
• Alberta’s 2026 Expansion: Following the iGaming Alberta Act, Alberta is set to become the second province to launch a regulated private market in 2026. Until then, residents continue to use the provincial PlayAlberta site or international offshore platforms.
• The “Gray” Market: In other provinces like Quebec and British Columbia, online poker exists in a “not illegal” status. Residents can play on major global brands, but these remain unregulated at the provincial level, with the exception of state-run sites like PlayNow (B.C.) and Espacejeux (Quebec).
