Event recap
Picking up the action from the final two tables, play was dominated by Aleksandr “leeel” Shepel who eventually took his big stack all the way to heads up. Along the way, he eliminated six players. The first was Bin “flyaway28” Zhou whose were cracked by Shepel’s set on the flop. Shepel got lucky again with two pair burning Jack Skeletron’s top pair. This was followed by a three-way showdown with Shepel and Aki “Seabossss” Virtanen eliminating D0G0fWAR in 12th place. Japan’s last hope, “otetsu”, also fell to Shepel with cracked by trip nines. To form the final table, Shepel finished off the very short stacked Virtanen in 10th place.
The final table kicked off with the top three holding roughly 75 percent of the chips in play. Shepel was ahead with 119 bb, Stefan “C3H5N3O6” Lehner ranked 2nd with 71 bb, Jonas “LobyPewis” Mackoff ranked 3rd with 71 bb, while the rest had 20 bb and below. First hand was immediate fireworks with three players all in. China’s Xdao won it with railing Tintenfisch’s and beating Ran “Pearblossom” Koller’s . This sent Koller down to 1 bb which was claimed by Brazil’s Rock Pitbull. Down to 7 players, Shepel pressured the table with raises at nearly every hand resulting in three double ups paid to bring his lead down significantly. However, he made up for it by outdrawing Skinny Pete’s with eight on the board. Up to 71 bb, Shepel’s closest challenger was Mackoff with 34 bb.
At six remaining, Canada’s TooStonedMonkey’s pocket Jacks found a Jack on the board to crack and cripple Xdao’s pocket Aces. A few hands after, the two met again with TooStonedMonkey’s pocket Aces finishing off Xdao in 6th place. However, TooStonedMonkey’s rush was put to a quick halt with Daniel “Rock Pitbull” Bertoldi doubling up then Mackoff taking the rest with straight over . Mackoff went on to rail Rock Pitbull in 4th place with pocket nines beating pocket eights, Shepel emptied out Lehner in 3rd place with AJo dominating A7o, to bring about heads up. Shepel was ahead 78 bb to Mackoff’s 47 bb.
Three minutes in, Mackoff took the lead. Shepel quickly grabbed back. It switched once more to Mackoff’s advantage, and from there, he held it to the end. The final hand was Mackoff , Shepel , board . Despite the loss for Shepel, it was still a very impressive result. This was his first WSOP final table and largest recorded tournament score of US$ 44,174.39. For champion Mackoff, he will be gunning for a third career ring at RING #7: BIG 25 with a healthy stack of 126 bb, which has him currently 8th in chips.
