A Quick History of High Stakes Poker

If you’re a new-generation poker player and somehow you’ve never heard of the amazing poker show, here’s the short version. High Stakes Poker premiered on GSN on January 16, 2006, and it changed poker TV overnight. Instead of tournaments, it showed real cash games with buy-ins starting at $100,000 – actual money on the table, not chips with no consequence.

Season 4, filmed in 2007 at South Point Casino, is still one of the most talked-about runs. Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Jamie Gold, and Guy Laliberte all sat at the table across 17 episodes. That season also introduced the $500 bonus for winning a hand with 2-7 – the worst possible starting hand – which led to some legendary bluffs, including Hellmuth forcing Mike Matusow to fold pocket kings with a $40,000 bet.

Later seasons produced some of poker’s most replayed hands: Tom Dwan’s bluff against Barry Greenstein and Peter Eastgate as a 95% underdog, and Dwan’s river bet with 9-high that got Phil Ivey to fold after a three-minute tank. The original GSN run ended after Season 7 in 2011, partly a casualty of the online poker crackdown that year.
