The 2024 World Poker TourWPT Australia Championship has concluded at The Star Gold Coast and 24 trophies have been awarded. While John “Bert” Perry eluded a tournament victory during the series on his home soil, his four final table appearances were enough to secure the Player of the Festival (POF) ranking. It once more cements the status as one of the most consistent Australian live poker grinders throughout the last few years for the regular on the Asia-Pacific live poker circuit.

“Pretty special series! I am so bloody fortunate to have run so hot! Player of the Festival World Poker Tour (WPT) Australia 2024. Thanks for all the love & support from my friends, fam, Jennifer, my beautiful rail, and the Australian Poker Open,“ Perry wrote on his Facebook page.

As has been the case in many previous live poker events, Perry has had a boisterous rail and they had four reasons to get excited during the festival on home soil. Perry reached no fewer than four final tables and edged past Hamish Crawshaw to claim the Australia-shaped POF trophy.

It all kicked off with third place in the A$1,650 Mystery Bounty Event which drew a total of 425 entries. With notables such as Shem Goltz and Ash Gupta among the finalists as well, Perry finished in third place for a cash prize of A$38,297. Gupta cut a heads-up deal with Matthew Morris and took home the larger cash prize of A$76,404 but Morris won the trophy and A$68,102.

A few days later, Perry was denied a trophy by just one spot as he finished runner-up to Hugo Dief in the A$800 Pot-Limit Omaha event. There was once again a deal involved as Perry claimed A$25,427, while Dief walked away with A$26,360.

The third time was not a charm either in terms of a trophy as he finished second again! This time, it was in the A$2,000 Mini Championship Event out of a field of 218 entries and 64 re-entries. Perry earned the bigger cash prize of A$98,000 but China’s Chao Duan posed for the winner shot as he padded his bankroll with A$91,658.

Perry then sealed the POF victory with another final table appearance in the four-card variant in the A$5,000 Pot Limit Omaha High Roller. The tournament drew a total of 74 entries for a prize pool of A$340,400. Only the top 11 spots were pair with big names such as Yoon Kang, Kahle Burns, Joshua McCully and Michael Wang all departing in the money prior to Perry. His exit in sixth place came with a payday of A$17,713 and he cashed for nearly A$300,000 during the entire series.

Bert Perry In Asia

Perry’s results on the live poker circuit have been very consistent throughout the last few years and he now boasts more than USD $1.3 million in scores. He ran deep earlier this year in the 2024 WPT Prime Gold Coast Championship Event with a 14th place out of 1,395 entries for A$,25,580. During the 2024 WPT Cambodia Championship in January, he cashed in five events including two final table appearances.

Many other Asia-Pacific live stops have seen the Aussie run deep such as Poker Dream, U Series of Poker, and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). His biggest score in a live poker event to date came during the WPT Prime Cambodia stop in March 2023. Out of a field of 125 entries in the $3,000 High Roller, it was Perry who lifted the trophy for the winner shot and earned $105,487 for his efforts.

The next stop for the Aussie is the Asian Poker Tour in Taipei City, which just kicked off and promises record numbers across the board. With his POF victory on home soil, Perry also earned a USD $5,000 package for the 2024 WPT Prime Championship in Las Vegas this upcoming December. The marquee $1,100 buy-in will once more feature a $5 million guarantee and the full schedule for the entire WPT World Championship has just been released.

Watch out for the always jovial Perry, as another deep run for the Aussie would be no surprise at all.
