Stephen Song is an American poker player who made his biggest splash in the live poker tournament scene in 2022. With a clutch win at the WPT Prime Championship to end the year, Song climbed to the 3rd place of the GPI ranking.

– Stephen Song’s Career –

The young poker pro’s first recorded live tournament cash earned him $32,957 and a 1st place title at the 2016 October Poker Weekend in Verona, USA. No doubt buoyed by the early success, Song poured more time on the live felt evidenced by his 17 cashes in 2017.

Song broke the six-figure payday mark in January of 2018. He placed 6th at the WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open and took home $138,254 for the trouble. The year also saw him taking more shots at the World Series of Poker, cashing in at 14 events. His most substantial payday at the premier circuit came in October when he placed 2nd at a High Roller event for $73,539.

Song followed through in January 2019 with a 1st place finish at another WSOP High Roller event at the Thunder Valley, Lincoln, USA. The year-opener earned him $75,480. His biggest strike came midway through the year with another 1st place finish at the WSOP for a handsome $341,854, a new career-high at the time. He also took down another title at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open for $285,243.

As with every other poker player, 2020 signaled a slump in tournament output for Song. However, he managed to squeeze in six live tournament cashes for the year.

Song resumed his stride in 2021, placing 2nd at a Deep Stack event of the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown with a $85,850 purse to show for it. Close to the end of the year, he made another significant impact in the WSOP circuit. He finished 3rd at The Closer event of WSOP 2021 for $172,855. He backed this up with another six-figure score at the WPT Rock N’ Roll Poker Open, placing 6th for $103,295 in November 2021. In somewhat of a foreshadowing, Song closed the year out with a top finish at a WSOP High Roller event for $65,130.

It was in 2022 when Song really began making significant headway toward the top of the poker echelon. He cashed 51 events, the most prolific year in his young career. His first significant payday for the year came in March when he placed 4th at the Venetian DeepStack Showdown Poker Series for $62,585. Then, in April, he placed 6th at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown High Roller event for $130,600.

In June 2022, Song posted a new career-high earning of $476,990 for his runner-up finish at a 6-handed event of the WSOP 2022 in Las Vegas. He also posted a 4th place finish at the Venetian DeepStack Championship Series for $139,000. Then, he went on to place 2nd and 3rd at two events of the PokerGo Tour in September for a total of $193,900 in winnings.

Song rallied strong in the last quarter of the year. In October, he beat the competition at the Wynn Fall Classic to win the trophy and $85,995. But his best live cash to date came in December. Song took down the WPT Prime Championship for a whopping $712,650 purse.

The end-of-the-year surge earned Song the 2022 Global GPI Player of the Year and the Mid-Major Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win two titles in a single season.
