His AUD 53,000 ($38,160) runner-up finish in the 2026 Australian Poker Cup takes his recorded career total beyond $340,000. The result is also the largest live tournament cash of his career to date.

Biography & Poker Background

Ross Coveney represents Ireland in tournament coverage, although several major poker databases list him under Australia. Most of his recorded results have come in Sydney, where he has regularly competed in tournaments at The Star Sydney.

His documented tournament history includes results dating back to at least 2022. That year, he reached the final stages of the WPTDeepStacks Sydney Main Event before returning to Ireland and winning the Irish Poker Classic.

Coveney continued to play regularly in Australia over the following seasons. His results include cashes in recurring Sydney tournaments, the Sydney Champs, WPT Australia and the Sydney Millions.

His biggest result came in September 2026 during the WPT Australia 2026 festival.

Coveney advanced to the final table of the Australian Poker Cup as the chip leader with 5,660,000. His stack was more than 20 big blinds ahead of his closest challenger when the final nine returned.

He maintained his lead through much of the final table and eliminated Filip Radic in fourth place before beginning heads-up play against Ailen Ji at a narrow disadvantage.

Coveney briefly pulled the stacks level during heads-up play, but Ji regained control before winning the final hand. Coveney held pocket jacks against Ji’s ace-queen, with a queen on the turn securing the title for Ji.

Coveney received AUD 53,000 ($38,160) for second place, losing a flip to Ji in the last hand of the tournament.

Play Style & Strategy

There is limited public interview or strategy material available from Coveney, making it difficult to define his overall playing style from tournament results alone.

Coverage from the Australian Poker Cup showed his ability to accumulate chips during the later stages of a large-field event. One of his biggest Day 2 pots came when his pocket jacks improved to four of a kind against Matthew Jones’ pocket eights, helping Coveney secure the final-table chip lead.

With four players remaining, Coveney eliminated Radic after his ace-ten improved against pocket nines. He later recovered from an early heads-up deficit against Ji and briefly brought the stacks level.

His Australian Poker Cup performance took him through a field of 441 entries and remains the strongest recorded tournament result of his career.
