The Inspiring Story of APPA Taipei: Triumphs & Challenges
The APPA Taipei (Asia Pacific Athletic Association) occupies a legendary yet tragic place in the history of Taiwanese poker. As the first organization of its kind in Taiwan, APPA was the pioneer that attempted to legitimize Texas Hold’em as a technical sport long before the “Mind Sports” era became a multi-million dollar industry. Its permanent closure in 2020 remains a cautionary tale and a defining “alarm” for the global poker community.
The Legacy of the APPA Taipei
APPA Taipei was founded with a singular, idealistic mission: to promote and educate the public on Texas Hold’em as a sport of skill rather than chance. Unlike many clubs that operated in the shadows, APPA Taipei sought absolute transparency. It famously gave up the high-profit margins associated with “grey area” gaming to provide members with a safe, non-profit environment.
For years, it stood as the only association to successfully survive multiple police inspections, twice receiving a “No Prosecution” verdict from the judicial system. This record gave the Taiwan poker circle a sense of security, until the events of January 2020.

The Watershed Moment: The 2020 Raid
At 10:55 PM on January 20, 2020, the landscape of Taiwan poker changed forever. A massive law enforcement operation, personally commanded by prosecutors and involving five police stations, executed a search warrant on the APPA premises.
- The Detention: All players and staff on-site were detained for over 20 hours, a move that sent shockwaves through the local community.
- The Seizure: Law enforcement confiscated all computers, screens, and tournament equipment. Most controversially, all personal cash found on individuals was withheld.
- The “Evidence”: Despite APPA’s commitment to legal play, the raid was sparked by internal reports. Leadership maintained the crackdown was a “disconnect between ideal and reality.”
The Aftermath and Permanent Closure
In the wake of the raid, APPA chose to suspend operations permanently. The association’s leadership stated they could no longer guarantee member safety in an environment where even “no-prosecution” verdicts were ignored by shifting law enforcement tides.
“This incident represents that Taiwan has no open place to compete in Texas poker… the ideal we adhere to is full of endless heartache.” APPA Official Statement
While APPA as a venue is gone, its impact remains. The raid forced remaining poker associations to radically change their operating codes. Every modern venue in Taipei today, from the Asia Poker Arena to Ace8 , operates under the heavy shadow of the APPA raid, ensuring structures are hyper-compliant to avoid a similar fate.
