Known for his big personality and loud, fun-loving nature at the table, Smith was a true “connector” in the poker community until his passing in 2019.

Career Earnings & Biggest Results

With total live tournament earnings of over $6.3 million (according to The Hendon Mob), Smith was a consistent winner at the highest levels. Biography & Poker Background

Gavin Smith’s journey into poker began in his hometown of Guelph, where he learned card games like cribbage from his father. He didn’t start playing poker seriously until his mid-20s, initially competing in mixed games with coworkers. Before becoming a pro, he worked as a taxi driver and on a golf course, eventually becoming a poker dealer in 1996. He even ran his own poker club in Kitchener, Ontario, for a short time before moving to the professional circuit in 1998. His career took off when he met fellow pro Erick Lindgren, who helped him transition into the high-stakes world during the height of the poker boom.

Play Style & Strategy

Smith was famous for a play style that was aggressive, unpredictable, and loud. He often described himself as someone who would “play any two cards,” making it almost impossible for his opponents to figure out what he was holding. He used his outgoing personality as a strategic weapon, constantly talking and joking to get under his opponents’ skin and force them into making mistakes. Despite his wild reputation, he had a deep mathematical understanding of the game, which he honed during his early days as a single-table satellite specialist. This unique mix of “feel” and logic made him a dangerous opponent in both No Limit Hold’em and Mixed Game formats.
