Through the years, poker events at NagaWorld have consistently drawn players from all over the region and beyond. Located along the famous Mekong River, Cambodia’s capital city Phnom Penh is an easy travel from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. For players in India, China, and the Philippines, travel is slightly further with direct flights also available.
Prior to WPT’s arrival, Phnom Penh didn’t come across as a premier poker destination, however, it has since reestablished its reputation as a poker go-to and a melting pot of cultures. Over the years, this stop has become a favorite for WPT that in January 2024 it staged the its first Main Tour in Southeast Asia at NagaWorld and went on to pay out over USD 2.4 Million.
With the festival drawing near, several players have already confirmed attendance such as some of India’s finest Dhaval Mudgal and Vishal Ojha. Mudgal is a WPT frequent flyer and a decorated champion having won the WPT Vietnam Main Event in 2018. Mudgal shared,
“It has been a strange couple of months with so many cancellations! Excited about the next month with a bunch of tournaments happening in casinos so less likelihood of any issues. I am only playing the main and high roller at WPT Cambodia but it should be great considering loads of the heroes are in Vegas!”
Another player certain to attend is American-Vietnamese Kyle Bao Diep who has had numerous successes all over Asia. Diep placed 6th at the first WPT Cambodia Championship last January for his largest career payout of USD 90,500. Diep expressed,
“I have been attending the WPT Cambodia stops since 2019 and have consistently had a positive experience. The events are well-organized, and Danny and the WPT team consistently demonstrate exceptional professionalism. I have achieved notable success in recent WPT stops and hope to maintain this momentum, potentially achieving deep runs and securing another WPT trophy. Poker in Asia is experiencing significant growth and is becoming a popular destination for players worldwide. I genuinely hope this trend continues and that more players from regions include an Asian stop in their poker journeys.
Also making a return is Junnie Pamplona who will be arriving with a contingent from the Philippines. Despite not having a major title in his portfolio, Pamplona is overdue having come very close to glory with two final table appearances in Cambodia, finishing 2nd and 3rd. Pamplona is optimistic,
“Gusto bumalik sa WPT kasi gusto makuha ung Main Event champion. Sana someday makuha ko ung trophy ng main event. Maganda maglaro sa WPT kasi madami ka matutanan sa mga ibang players na mga pro para mag improve ung laro. (Translated: I plan to return to WPT because I hope to become the Main Event champion. Maybe someday I’ll be able to claim that trophy. It is always great playing at WPT because there are so many things to learn and my game improves whenever I play alongside the pros.”
