Metro’s first event of the year draws big numbers; Edoc in the top three

The Metro Card Club, the biggest poker room in Asia, held its first big event of the calendar year, the 2M Guaranteed. The event ran for six days, from January 25th-30th in Pasig City, Philippines.

691 entries

Through the years, Metro has been known for their relatively small buy-in events with big guarantees. Players come in droves from different parts of the country, producing very large fields. At the recently concluded 2M Guaranteed, it was packed from wall to wall. With a buy-in of only PHP4,000 (USD 80.45), the total number of entries reached 691 over the combined four starting flights. This boosted the prize pool above the guarantee to PHP2,345,945 (USD 47,188).

As expected, many local pros were in attendance. The likes of John Tech, Czardy Rivera, Ian Brion, and Moe Saquing all found their way into the money round but none of them would grace the final table. Instead, it was Lester Edoc who was once again in familiar territory.

Last year, Edoc won two of Metro’s events, and this year, he was looking to get a jumpstart with a win at the 2M Guaranteed. Just earlier this month, Edoc claimed three APT titles and clearly the fire was still burning red hot. He entered the final table, eliminated several players, including Flo Campomanes, and was the dominating chip leader entering three-handed.

Mc Edwin Montanias claims the title

However despite his experience, his run didn’t last. His hunt for the title was put to a dead halt when both of his opponents, Carlrex David Co and Mc Edwin Montanias won a majority of duels against him. Montanias eventually eliminated the pro in 3rd place and then went on to win the event in just a few hands against Co.

Montanias was awarded the PHP700,000 (USD 14,080) first prize and his first ever Metro Main Event championship title.
