2021 WSOP Online [International]: Alexandros Theologis scores $1.2M and first bracelet at the $25K SHR; Kahle Burns runner up

Online Poker
08/31/2021

Three weeks ago the first seven digit payout was awarded to Brazil’s Eduardo Augusto Pires at the MILLIONAIRE MAKER event. Last night, Greek pro Alexandros Theologis became the second million dollar champion after taking down the $25,000 Super High Roller Championship NLH. Considerably one of the toughest events to conquer with the world’s leading pros comprising the bulk of the field, Theologis ruled the final table, defeating double bracelet holder Kahle Burns at heads up to capture the coveted US$ 1,212,032 first prize and first ever gold bracelet. Among the other finalists were Adrian Mateos, Mark Radoja, and Wenjie “Jerome001” Huang. Check out our recap, updated Natural8 leaderboards, and other festival stats down below.

The WSOP #21: $25,000 Super High Roller Championship NLH was a two day affair that kicked off on Sunday night with 158 players coughing up the US$ 25,000 buy in plus an added 97 re-entering to more than surpass the US$ 5M guarantee. The top 30 places earned a piece of the US$ 6,247,500 prize pool. During the two hours of final table competition, Greek pro Alexandros Theologis knocked out four players to lock up his first ever WSOP title, gold bracelet, and the immense US$ 1,212,032 first prize. Theologis became the second highest paid champion of the series and the second player from Greece to seize the gold.

Up until this big win, Theologis only had US$ 567K in tracked winnings which included 15 prior WSOP cashes. The bulk of it was earned at last year’s WSOP Online HK$ 8,000 No Limit Hold’em Championship where he placed 2nd for US$ 326,664. His other accomplishments include a 2021 PartyPoker Millions win last March for US$ 75K and a 2019 WPT Aria Summer Championship No Limit Hold’em title for US$ 30K. With this dream victory, Theologis zoomed to US$ 1.78 Million in combined live and online earnings.

Day 1 recap

Eight hours into Day 1, the bubble burst on China’s Kevin Pu with fellow countryman Wenjie “Jerome001” Huang cracking KcKs with Ad6h ace on the river (hand pictured below). From there, it took another two hours to form the final table.

Among the players profiting were WSOP decorated players Lev “LevMeAlone” Gottlieb (27th), Shyngis Satubayev (24th), and David Peters (19th). The event’s biggest spenders were Michael Addamo with eight buy ins and Samuel Vousden with five, both players walking away empty handed. For Chinese pro Wei Zhao, his sixth buy in got him to 18th place for US$ 66,310 but was still in the red. Day 1 wrapped up at the fall of Artur Martirosian on a bad beat with QdQh rivered by Theologis4h4c full house (hand pictured below).

Final table recap

Bringing in the biggest stack to the final table was Australian elite player Kahle Burns who delivered a double knockout at 13 remaining with QcQs dusting Isaac Haxton’s 10h4h and Pavlo Veksler’s JdJh on a board Ah10c8cKd3d. Burns was hunting down his third WSOP bracelet and third seven figure payout. Wedged in the middle were double bracelet winner Mark Radoja and triple bracelet winner Adrian Mateos. Apart from this event, Mateos has a chance at another gold, reaching the semis of the US$ 10K Heads Up Championship. Also in the round was Russian pro Anatoly Filatov with over US$ 6 Million in tracked live and online scores. Bringing up the rear was Rui Neves Ferreira. Both Ferreira and Radoja were on their second final table in this series. For eventual champion Theologis, he was ranked 3rd in chips.

No free ride at the final table with nearly every hand seeing at least a raise. Action was fast and aggressive. During the first hour, Huang became the first player to cross over 100 BB after winning two big pots off Burns. The Aussie made up for the lost chips, railing Timothy Nuter in 9th place with 8d8c set over AcKh top pair on a board Ah8s2d9cJc. This was followed by a few double ups to short stacks Ferriera, Mateos, and Filatov, then Theologis landed his first of four eliminations, sending Mateos out with QsQc over Ah10h brick. Ferreira quickly followed with all his chips sent to Huang, and Burns emptied out Brazil’s last hope, Eduardo Amaral Silva in 6th place. By the first break, Theologis was ahead, Huang trailed by just 2 BB.

Kicking off the second hour, Burns put the pressure on Radoja to send the Canadian pro down to 13 BB. Filatov did the rest with AhJh nut flush (three hearts on the flop) to dust Ad10c. From here on, Theologis took command and never relinquished. He shipped pot after pot with a couple of big ones before delivering the next bust. On the hand pictured below, his Ac4c improved to a flush to best Huang’s Kh3h two pair.

With his monstrous stack, Theologis continued to attack his opponents with multiple shoves. This led to the fall of Filatov in 4th place with Jc10c behind Theologis’KcQs on a board Ac2hJs5sKs. With nearly a third of the chips in play at his disposal, he booted Huang in 3rd place with 8h8c dominating 5d5c to face Burns at heads up. Ahead 6:1, his lead widened to 15:1. Burns managed to cut the gap to 6:1 on a double up but a failed bluff cost him. With Theologis back ahead 10:1, the final hand arrived. Burns had Ah10s, Theologis Ad6d, the cards came 9h4hKcQs6c for a million dollar golden victory on the river.
