Somuchpoker’s own Mate Hanusi ships WPT Korea 2024 Championship Event for KRW 434,936,000 (~USD 323K)

WPT Korea 2024 Championship Event in full swing

The WPT Korea 2024 Championship Event festivities at Landing Casino, Jeju Shinhwa World, South Korea, wrapped up with Hungary’s Mate Hanusi clinching the win after four grueling days on the felt. Hanusi outlasted the 1,065 entry field and bested the final nine from behind after coming into the final table with the smallest stack of 15 big blinds. Hanusi patiently waited for the right spots and overtook the lead only by the heads up battle against China’s Ma Li. It took nearly seven hours of final table play before Hanusi secured the overall victory with a final flip to knock his last opponent out and claim the KRW 434,936,000 (~USD 323,500) top prize, WPT Korea Main Event trophy, and the inaugural WPT Korea Main Event Ring.

Interestingly, Hanusi won his Main Event entry from a $110 online satellite at WPT Global and had one shot to make it through. Hanusi bagged each day with one of the shortest stacks yet unbelievably came out on top by the Final Day. A huge profit for the Hungarian, his run at this season’s WPT Korea is definitely one to remember.

The final day of the WPT Korea 2024 Championship Event welcomed only nine remaining players in battle for the largest share of the KR₩ 2,603,286,000 (~US$ 1,936,270) pot. It took nearly two hours of play before the first casualty was seen with Vietnam’s Nguyen Duy Pham Khanh calling off with Ac7s against a button shove from China’s Dai Linghui. Dai with a better AdJh locked in the win and left Nguyen to settle for a ninth place payout of KRW 43,500,000 (~USD 32,350). Following suit not long after was Russia’s Valeriy Fokin who slammed his last five big blinds in with Ad10d right into Hanusi Mate’s KdKc

Second in the running to start the day, Ding Yayun found herself losing momentum right off the bat after she doubled off Hanusi in the first level with 6s7s against the Hungarian’s JsJd. A struggling attempt to recover, Ding open shoved seventeen big blinds in with AcJc and was called by Zhang Chi with AhKd. Dominated, Ding lost her chance at the title and exited shortly in seventh place. Just minutes later, Azerbaigian’s Aghayev Farhad followed behind, having lost a flip to China’s Zhang Chi for his remaining seven big blinds.

Down to five players in contention for the Main Event title, final table chip leader Fang Po Wen found himself amongst the shortest stacks by the first break and committed his last eight big blinds with Kc3c folded to him on the small blind. Big blind Dai Linghui called off with Qd9d and won the race to knock Fang out entirely from the Main Event games. Stacks continuously swung back and forth with Dai doubling up two of his opponents before risking it all with 10h10c. Up against Zhang’s 2s2c, Dai was out of luck after the flop peeled a set for his opponent, leaving him out of the Championship Event running.

Three left in the game, Zhang eventually pushed with JdJh and ended up losing a flip against Ma Li’s AdQc for a 45 big blind pot along with his tournament life. Running good, Ma kicked off the heads up battle with a commanding 3:1 advantage vs Hanusi but soon lost her lead within the first ten hands. Inching over his opponent, Hanusi secured the win with a concluding flip, running 8h8d against Ma’s Ad9s to land the final victory. An impressive finish for Hanusi, the Hungarian runner banked a career best payout of KRW 434,936,000 (~USD 323,500) with Ma settling for a second place finish and KRW 290,150,000 (~USD 215,800) in winnings.
