Hao Chuang Wins The Single Day High Roller
"I'm really happy I won because I was really lucky today. When we got to the final table, the tournament structure was one day only, so everyone was very short-stacked. In this kind of structure, luck is more important than skill."
The first Single Day High Roller of the Korea Poker Cup Series 2025 brought in some well known Asian heavyweights mostly from China and Taiwan. A total of 79 entered to fatten up the prize pool to KRW 172,400,000 (~US$ 117,245). Taiwan's Hao Chuang defeated Chi Jen "Justin" Chu at heads up to hoist his first KPC trophy along with a payout of KRW 50,000,000 (~US$ 34,000). In a post win interview with the champ, he shared his strategy to get to the top.
"I think in this tournament, because it's really fast and it's a single-day high roller, the average big blind is around 25 BB, and 4 or 5 players have around 14 or 15 BB. I don't think you can open too much, so I just kept my range open. When we started the heads-up, we both had around 40 BB each, so it was even. I started with a standard strategy, playing tight, and I was opening a lot of hands. Then, there was one hand I remember: he limped, and I opened with 7-8 suited. He called, and the flop came A-7-J with two diamonds. I bet 1/3 of the pot, and he called. The turn was the 2 of spades, and I checked. He bet 1/3, then I check-raised. I decided to check-raise with middle pair because he could have a combo like 8-9 or 9-10. I think that’s the best hand I played today."
