Triton Poker Series: The Rise of High-Stakes Poker – Part 1

Throughout poker history, there have always been moments when a new idea changed the direction of the game. New players, tournaments, and series appeared, opening new chapters in the world of poker. One of the biggest changes of the past decade came from a series that many people initially saw as a risky project: the Triton Poker Series .

Today, Triton Poker is known for hosting some of the biggest high-stakes poker tournaments in the world, featuring record-breaking buy-ins and the biggest names in poker. What started as an Asian initiative has grown into a global high-stakes poker brand and proved that Asia can host some of the most prestigious super high roller events in the world.

The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series is held several times a year in different locations around the world. Buy-ins usually start at $15,000, but throughout the series’ history, there have also been events with entry fees of hundreds of thousands of dollars, including tournaments with $1 million buy-ins.

From the beginning, Triton’s goal was not simply to organize poker tournaments. The idea was to create a complete experience: elite fields, a premium environment and high-quality broadcasts that could bring high-stakes poker to a much wider audience.

From a Bold Idea to a Global High-Stakes Poker Brand

The Triton Poker Series started in January 2016 in Parañaque, Philippines. The first event was a $200,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament, attracting 52 players. At the beginning, many people questioned whether there was a long-term market for a poker series built around the world’s biggest high-stakes professionals and wealthy businessmen.

Triton quickly proved that there was a demand for this type of event.

The series created a place where the biggest names in high-stakes poker could compete against each other. From the start, Triton focused on the elite high roller community.

The main games at Triton events are No-Limit Hold’em and Short Deck , while Pot-Limit Omaha tournaments are also occasionally included in the schedule. Since 2019, every Triton stop has featured a Main Event in both of the most important formats.

The People Behind Triton Poker

The story of Triton is closely connected to the Asian high-stakes poker community. Important figures behind the creation of the series include Paul Phua , Richard Yong and Ivan Leow , who helped build a platform that would put Asia at the center of the world’s biggest poker events.

The people behind Triton understood exactly what high-stakes players were looking for, because many of them were part of this world themselves.

Ivan Leow was one of the most important figures in Triton’s history. The Malaysian player was not only successful at the tables but also became one of the most recognizable faces of the series.

In 2022, tragedy hit the high-stakes poker community. Ivan Leow unexpectedly passed away at the age of 41 due to natural causes. His legacy remains part of Triton today. The annual player ranking is named after him: the Ivan Leow Player of the Year Award.

Triton Million: The Most Expensive Poker Tournament in History

One of the biggest moments in Triton’s history came in 2019. The Triton Million for Charity in London became one of the most unique events not only in Triton history but in the entire history of poker. With a £1 million buy-in, it became the most expensive poker tournament in history, setting a new record for high-stakes poker events.

The event attracted 54 players, including some of the world’s best professional players and members of the business elite.

Despite the huge buy-in, the tournament was not only about money. The Triton Million for Charity also supported charitable causes and brought a new level of attention to high-stakes poker events.

The tournament created a $65 million prize pool, proving that poker could become a premium sporting event capable of attracting the world’s wealthiest players.

Jason Koon, Phil Ivey and the Stars of the Triton Era

As Triton continued to grow, a new generation of high-stakes players became closely connected with the series.

One of the most important faces of Triton is Jason Koon. The American professional is not only a regular participant in Triton events but also one of the most successful players in the series’ history. Koon is among Triton’s biggest winners in terms of prize money, and he is one of the players with the most Triton Poker titles in the history of the series.

Alongside him, poker legends such as Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan regularly appear at Triton tables. Both players became some of the most recognizable names in poker long before the creation of the series.
