The Rich History of Irish Poker Tours

The Irish Poker Open stands as the longest-running No Limit Texas Hold’em tournament in Europe and the second-longest in the world, after the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

The event was founded in 1980 by Terry Rogers, a legendary Irish bookmaker inspired by his visits to Las Vegas and his friendship with WSOP founder Benny Binion.

Rogers’ vision was to create a European counterpart to the WSOP, blending the competitive spirit of poker with Ireland’s renowned hospitality.

Terry Rogers’ annual journeys to Las Vegas not only fueled his passion for poker but also forged great friendships with some of the game’s greatest players.

In a gesture of Terry’s bookmaking services, the US players who had benefited from Rogers’ generosity and services during their time in Las Vegas repaid the favor by traveling to Ireland for the Irish Open in the early 1980s.

These “American invasions,” as they were fondly remembered by Donnacha and Liam Flood, became legendary.

Rogers welcomed the visitors with unforgettable flair—on one occasion, he arranged for a yellow Rolls-Royce to greet them at the airport; in another, he arrived with a white horse, which Amarillo Slim, a true horseman, promptly rode out of the terminal.

Among the American poker royalty who made the trip were Tom McEvoy, Jack Keller, Stu Ungar, Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, and Perry Green from Alaska.

Their presence added to the tournament’s prestige and created unforgettable memories, such as when the players tried to pay for goods in Killiney village with chips from Terry’s poker tournament—a custom they were used to in Las Vegas.

After Rogers’ passing in 1999, Liam Flood took over and expanded the event’s reach. The tournament has moved to larger venues to accommodate the growing number of participants, including the Merrion Casino, Jury’s Ballsbridge Hotel, Burlington Hotel, and Citywest Hotel.

The Irish Poker Open is celebrated not just for its high-level competition but also for its friendly atmosphere and the legendary “craic” (fun and conversation) that defines Irish poker culture.
