Since launching in 1998 as the Crown Australian Poker Championship, the Aussie Millions has grown from a local series into one of the most important stops on the international poker calendar. Played at Crown Melbourne, the largest casino complex in the Southern Hemisphere, it built its reputation through strong structures and high buy in events that attracted serious competition. Over the years, players like Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen have made deep runs here, along with many of today’s leading professionals, all chasing one of the most respected titles in the game.

The festival’s return, dubbed the Aussie Millions Poker Championship , follows extensive regulatory reforms at Crown and a fresh commitment to restoring the venue’s status as a global poker destination. With cards in the air from April 24 to May 10, 2026, the 17-day festival is set to reclaim its place on the international calendar, blending world-class competition with the charm of a Melbourne autumn.

Champions of the Aussie Millions Main Event

While the high-roller challenges dominate the headlines, the Aussie Millions Main Event remains the true heartbeat of the festival. It is the tournament that makes headlines, awards the coveted championship ring and turns winners into fixtures of the professional circuit.

The history of the Main Event is a collection of standout stories, ranging from local players securing life-changing paydays to global stars proving time and again why they’re the best of the best.

Notable Winners

  • Peter Costa (2003): Winning the first Main Event to offer a significant seven-figure prize pool, Costa’s victory helped launch the series onto the international stage, signaling that Melbourne was a serious destination for high-stakes poker.
  • Tony Bloom (2004): Widely recognized as a sharp strategist in both sports betting and poker, Bloom’s victory at Crown demonstrated the precise, calculated approach required to navigate the Aussie Millions field.
  • Gus Hansen (2007): Perhaps the most well-remembered performance in the event’s history, the “Great Dane” topped a field of 747 entrants to take home AUD 1.5 million. Hansen’s aggressive, unconventional style remains one of the most discussed tournament runs in poker history.
  • Tyron Krost (2010): Krost’s win at age 23 highlighted the shift toward a new, analytical generation of players, proving that the Aussie Millions was an essential proving ground for the game’s rising talent.
  • Ari Engel (2016): Engel’s win was a display of sheer consistency. Navigating a tough final table, he secured the AUD 1.6 million first-place prize, further building his standing as one of the most reliable tournament players in the game.

While the current festival schedule offers events for every bankroll, the Aussie Millions holds a legendary status in poker history, largely thanks to its iconic AUD 250,000 Challenge. Though that particular Super High Roller showdown is no longer part of the lineup, it remains defined by the years it drew the world’s elite, serving as the ultimate stage for the highest stakes and best displays of professional skill.

Destination Melbourne: Poker & Travel

Royal Botanic Victoria Gardens

Australia (and specifically Melbourne) is consistently ranked among the world’s most desirable destinations to live. Beyond the bustling environment of the poker room, the local autumn weather is perfect for exploring. Players can easily unwind by visiting Federation Square, taking a relaxing walk through the iconic Royal Botanic Gardens, or tasting local flavours at the historic Queen Victoria Market.

Logistically, the city is incredibly player-friendly. Crown Melbourne is located on the south bank of the Yarra River, easily reachable from Tullamarine Airport via SkyBus or taxi. Within the central business district (CBD), the “Free Tram Zone” makes travel between the casino and major tourist attractions both convenient and cost-effective.

Practical Information for Players

To ensure a seamless experience, keep the following travel and registration essentials in mind:

  • Registration: All tournament entries must be processed in person at the registration desk on the first floor of the Crown complex. Please bring a valid photographic ID (e.g., passport) and a Crown Rewards membership card.
  • Currency: Entry fees are payable strictly in Australian Dollars (AUD) on-site.
  • Dress Code: Crown Melbourne maintains a “smart casual” standard. Avoid active sporting attire, work boots, or ripped clothing to ensure seamless entry to the casino floor.
  • Gameplay: Modern tournament structures apply, with many events featuring the increasingly popular Big Blind Ante format and a Shot Clock system to keep the action moving at a professional pace.

Whether you’re a seasoned high-roller eyeing the AUD 25K Challenge or a recreational player looking to run up a bankroll via the AUD 85 Milestone satellites, the 2026 Aussie Millions offers a rare opportunity to compete in a historic event. The poker world’s eyes are firmly on Melbourne; the stage is set, and the wait is finally over.
