From the Green Felt to the Green Pitch: The Poker Pro Soccer Manager Out to Bust the USMNT

Adding a new chapter to the Sergej Barbarez poker legacy, when the whistle blows in San Francisco on July 1 for the World Cup Round of 32, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino will face a highly unusual opponent in the technical area. The story of the Bosnia and Herzegovina manager is the ultimate soccer-coach poker crossover: alongside his stellar past as a Bundesliga goalscorer, he is a hardcore card player who has reached the exclusive WSOP final table elite not once, but twice.
Sergej Barbarez took the reins of the Bosnian national team in 2024 – his very first managerial role – and immediately made history by guiding his country to the World Cup after a 12-year drought. But even more fascinating than his football tactics is his background: before returning to the beautiful game’s spotlight, he built a career over 13 years, filled with serious cashes on the competitive live tournament circuit.
Sergej Barbarez Poker Career: an Omaha Grandmaster
A quick look at the WSOP poker database reveals that the Bosnian tactician is no mere hobbyist: he was feared as a genuine Pot-Limit Omaha specialist. His major breakthrough arrived in 2017 when he navigated his way to an 8th-place finish ($21,172) in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event at the WSOP in Las Vegas. He kept that momentum rolling a few months later at the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) in Rozvadov. Making yet another WSOP final table in the €2,200 PLO Eight-Max – battling alongside the well-known poker pro Allen Kessler – he finished in 5th place to pocket $24,385.
His biggest single financial score, however, came five years later in 2022. At the $600 ARIA Poker Classic event, he fought through a massive 301-entry field to reach heads-up play, ultimately finishing as the runner-up for $28,299. Throughout his journey on the felt, Barbarez also made appearances at the Wynn Summer Classic and the European Poker Tour (EPT) , and raked in over $20,000 at a 2019 World Poker Tour (WPT) Barcelona PLO event. Just a year before his national team appointment, in 2023, he logged a 13th-place finish out of 182 entries in a €550 PLO Bounty Hunter at the WSOP Circuit in Rozvadov, before shifting his full focus to the national squad.
Translating Casino Strategies to the Stadium
What makes this unique background so dangerous is how seamlessly the skills from the casino floor translate to the football pitch. In poker, long-term survival demands extreme patience, calculated risk assessment, and the ability to detach emotionally from a crushing “bad beat“. For a football manager, this translates directly to meticulous squad rotation, maintaining strict tactical discipline, and keeping a completely cool head when the team concedes an unexpected early goal. Barbarez spent over a decade calculating exact pot odds and reading the subtle physical tells of his opponents across the table. Now, he applies that exact same analytical, ice-cold mindset to dissecting opposition formations and making high-stakes, split-second substitutions under the blinding stadium lights.
Tactical Warfare: Pochettino vs. The Poker Face
Although our hearts beat for poker rather than football, the sportsbooks remain ruthless: according to Caesars Sportsbook odds, Pochettino’s USA team is the heavy favorite (-205), while a Bosnian advancement would be considered a massive upset (+550).
Yet, the world-renowned Argentine manager will be tested by a strategist accustomed to grueling, multi-hour mental duels under immense stress. It is almost guaranteed that Barbarez is the only manager in international football who knows exactly what kind of pressure cooker awaits at an elite tournament finale.
And should the Bosnian fairytale come to an end on the San Francisco pitch, Barbarez will quickly find a perfect silver lining: the 2026 WSOP Main Event kicks off at Horseshoe & Paris in Vegas on July 2 – the very day after the knockout match!
I was introduced to poker 20 years ago through live tournament play. It soon became clear to me that this is a profoundly engaging and demanding pursuit. Beyond the competitive drive - and acknowledging the luck factor inherent in gambling - it incorporates elements of psychology and sociology, providing a unique window into human behavior. Although I have explored other forms, NLHE tournaments remain the most compelling challenge for me.
