Richard Ashby, famously known by his nickname “Chufty,” is one of the most talented mixed game players to ever come out of England. Originally from London and now living in Watford, he spent years as an options and futures market maker before turning his focus to the poker tables. He is a true veteran of the game who first started playing at his local tennis club and with his father at home. Known for his incredible skill in Omaha and Stud, Ashby has proven his longevity by winning major titles across three different decades. He is widely respected by his peers as a “sticky” opponent who can turn any hand into a winner.

Career Earnings & Biggest Results

According to The Hendon Mob, Richard Ashby has total live earnings of over $3.3 million. His biggest live cash came in 2010 at the WSOP in Las Vegas, where he finished 2nd in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship for $378,027.

Ashby is a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, and incredibly, both wins came in the exact same event 14 years apart. He won his first gold bracelet in 2010 in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event for $140,467. In 2024, he repeated the feat by winning the same $1,500 Seven Card Stud tournament again for $113,725. He has also found success on the WPT circuit, recently winning two events back-to-back at the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in late 2025. In early 2026, he showed he is still at the top of his game by cashing in the GUKPT London Main Event.

Biography & Poker Background

Born in 1972, Richard Ashby got his nickname “Chufty” from his university friends because he used the word “chuffed” so often. He entered his first live tournament at age 18 and turned professional in 2003. Before finding fame in live tournaments, he was already a legend in the online world, once emerging as the biggest cash game winner on the internet by earning over $1.8 million in just one month in 2009.

He is a former member of Team Full Tilt and a past winner of the “Best All-Round Player” at the British Poker Awards. While he is very comfortable in big PokerStars online events, Richard is also a frequent face at the Aussie Millions and the EPT . Despite his massive success, he remains a humble family man who is well-liked by everyone at the table.

Play Style & Strategy

Ashby is famous for a unique and highly creative style of play. While many modern pros play a very strict and mathematical game, Richard is known for playing a wide variety of hands and using his superior post-flop skills to outmaneuver his rivals. He loves to try and turn “trash” hands into winners, which makes him very unpredictable and difficult to play against.

He is a true specialist in Mixed Games, where the poker format changes frequently. He admits that he hardly ever practices Seven Card Stud outside of the WSOP, yet his natural intuition for the game has led to two bracelets in that format. He describes his approach as being a “sticky customer,” meaning he is very hard to push out of a pot once he is involved. This fearless attitude, combined with his years of experience in high-stakes cash games, allows him to thrive in tournaments where other players might feel the pressure.
