Biography & Poker Background

Born in 1963 in Chicago, Kenna James moved to California to pursue a career in acting and performing. Before he became a poker star, he worked as a mime, a clown, and even a waiter on Rodeo Drive. He got his start in the poker world as a dealer at Hollywood Park Casino in 1996, where he quickly fell in love with the game. After working his way up from small stakes to becoming a tournament director, he decided to turn professional in 1999. His background in performance made him a natural for televised poker, and he famously spent years traveling the world to play and direct tournaments in places like Russia, Austria, and Australia.

Play Style & Strategy

James is known for a gentlemanly but competitive approach to poker. He relies heavily on his ability to read people, often using his acting experience to pick up on physical tells and psychological patterns. He is a very disciplined player who believes that a good poker player must also be a “master of life,” focusing on mindset and emotional control. This philosophy led him to become a highly respected personal coach, helping other players find balance and improve their game. On the felt, he is famous for his politeness and sportsmanship, but he is never afraid to pull the trigger on a big bluff or make a hero call when he senses his opponent is out of line.

My relationship with cards started thanks to my father. I was still in elementary school when he first taught me how to play Rummy, and I still remember the long evenings spent playing cards with my family. During the poker boom, I was still underage, but the televised tournaments immediately captured my attention. I became fascinated with the game and started learning different poker formats whenever I had the chance. Later in life, as an adult, I was fortunate enough to spend four years playing poker professionally. During that time, I mainly focused on Heads-Up Sit and Go games, where I found the format that suited me best. Even though my professional career was relatively short, poker remains something I’m grateful to have experienced as a major part of my life. Today, I play mostly as a hobby, while writing has become my main focus. That said, my enthusiasm for writing about poker is just as strong as my passion for playing the game once was.
