Shengyuan Zhu Tops Day 1D Of The Red Dragon Championship

Level 12: 1,500 / 3,000 ante: 3,000
Shengyuan Zhu - Red Dragon Championship Day 1D Chip Leader

The fourth of five opening flights for the KR₩ 2 Billion (~$1,451,326) guaranteed RDPT Jeju II 2025 Championship is set in stone with 55 out of 221 players advancing to Day 2 at the end of level 12. That brings the total to 200 out of 770 with Flight E Turbo's late registration still open.

China's Shengyuan Zhu bagged the lead with 480,000 (160 BB) which puts him into second overall right now. His Journey started as one of the early birds that took their seats right at the start of level 1 and was a constant force on the leaderboard beginning with the knockout of Lei Li with A J against Li's Q J after a preflop all-in with the board running 5 7 8 3 9 in level 3. Another big hand came during level 8 where he called a 46 BB jam from Peng Chen on K 7 A 7 with A Q and Chen missed his J 9 flush draw on the J river. He then coasted to the end picking up a lot of small pots with controlled aggression. We had a quick chat with him after the flight:

Congrats on bagging the lead in Flight D! How do you feel?

It feels great. When your chips are much ahead of others, I think you can put more pressure on your opponents.

Tell us some key hands that got you to the top?

I tried to use strong hands to raise my opponents instead of bluffing. Too many bluffs will always be caught, which is too dangerous. Of course, I am lucky today that several of my weaker hands have overtaken my opponents on the river.

What is the plan for Day 2? It's not ITM yet, so play it safe, or go big or go home?

I hope Day 2 will continue today's momentum and enter Day 3 smoothly. To be honest, this is my first time offline, and I hope I can have a good ride.

Huu Dung Nguyen

Second in chips Huu Dung Nguyen from Vietnam started his day late, sitting at barely more than the 40,000 starting stack after late reg closed, but went on a tear in the last three levels. He knocked out Wenqing Cai with kings against eights, added around 40 BB with A Q on 2 6 Q T Q and put a 20 BB cherry on top by hitting trips on the river of the last hand against Jingjing Li with top-pair. He will start Day 2 with 441,000 (147 BB).

Sijia Zhang

Sijia Zhang - the only player hitting 17 KOs in the Team Event to single handedly qualify his team for the final - is a distant third with 316,000 (105 BB) which is still good for one of the top spots going into Day 2.

Flight E Turbo still has late registration open and the SMP Live Updates will resume over there until the lineup for Day 2 is complete.

Interview With Tommy Maguire

Level 9: 1,000 / 1,500 ante: 1,500
Tommy Maguire

We had a little chat with the friendly Aussie after he won the first event of the series.

Congrats on another win! Your third this year already. How does it feel?

Pretty good, it's nice to have a good start, but it's one of the smaller event, so I'm not going to get carried away celebrating or anything like that.

How did the tournament go? Smooth sailing?

So I was the shortest stack when the final table started and I just got outrageously lucky. First I won a 3-way all-in where I had Kings vs J9 off and J10 suited so that was for a lot of chips. And then the very next I had Aces vs Queens and so I doubled up again so after that I became the chip leader and I just kept running really fine.

How do you know about Red Dragon Poker Tour?

My roommate and my best friend, his name is Jordan, the commentator in the livestream, so I heard about it through him and the timing was good so I decided to come.

With a perfect start to the series already, planning on breaking the $500k life time earnings this RDPT?

It would be great, but I don't think about that, I actually have a few incorrect results in Hendon Mob, so if results were accurate I would really be well over 500K. So I don't actually think about it, I'm just going to play my best and see what happens.

Is this your first time here in Jeju? How was your experience so far?

Yes this is my first day. Nothing in particular. Actually I am interested in going on the rides at Shinhwa World, especially the water park. I am quite looking forward to doing that actually.

The $117k high roller runner-up last year was massive, how big of a change was that for your career, if any?

So that was actually one of the wrong results. So my actual score is 230K so that was actually a heads up deal that was a massive result for me. Especially because it was right at the very end of that series and I'd been having a terrible series. So to bring it all back in the last event was brilliant and yeah that was a massive, massive win for me.

How do you approach variance and maintain a positive outlook?

It's probably one of the toughest things about poker. It's not easy for me or for anybody. Consistent mindset work is really all you can do and just hope to run good.

How do you manage your bankroll and ensure you have enough to cover expenses during downswings?

I haven't had to worry about that for a long time, so it's not really something I have a good answer for. But definitely moving down stakes when you start down swinging is a good one. A lot more of people have too much pride to do that, but it's a very important thing to do if you're losing. And also you can consider selling action.

Interview With Xiaosheng Zheng

Level 6: 400 / 800 ante: 800
Xiaosheng Zheng

We caught up with the Chinese Pro yesterday after he finished runner-up in the Single Day High Roller the night before.

SMP: Hey, thanks for taking the time. How do you feel after the heads-up last night? Being short stack three-handed, what did it take to turn it around into a lead during HU and how did it fall apart?

Zheng: Except for a little frustration, I still felt quite relaxed. When there were three players remaining, I was the shortest stack, then I took the lead after winning with 88 against A5o and busted the player in third with JJ versus 33. The heads-up went on for a lot of levels then finally the blinds were too high - avg stack only 13BB - and I lost the race by losing two flips.

SMP: You played the Triton here in Jeju earlier this year, can we expect to see more of you in the nosebleed buy-ins?

Zheng: I will come to Jeju Island again in September for the next Triton. With my current bankroll and skills, I think I will participate in the competition for no more than $30,000.

SMP: Take us back to 2017, winning the first recorded tournament of your career in Macau for $45K and then banking $152K just two months after. What was that like and how did it change your life?

Zheng: Fortunately, my first ITM was a champion, and then my second ITM was a high bonus. These two bonuses made me have more bankroll and more confidence in MTT. Before that, I had a full-time job as a securities investment consultant, and after that, I put my focus on my Texas Hold'em career.

SMP: What are some other highlights of your career that come to mind?

Zheng: I have won two high roller championships in China poker game, the biggest tournament in China, and about 10 other championships.

SMP: Having won more than $1.4M and playing since 2017, what keeps you hungry to come back for more?

Zheng: I like the team atmosphere of friends celebrating when winning, friends encouraging each other when losing, and then I have entered the FT of main events about 10 times over the years, but only got two second places. I am eager to win a main event championship.

SMP: You have played all over Asia and Europe, what are your favorite poker destinations and why?

Zheng: My favorite is Macau, because it is close to my home, has a pleasant climate and rich food. It is also the beginning of my MTT career. I have had great luck there.

SMP: How and when did you get into poker?

Zheng: I learned about Texas Hold'em in 2015. At first, it was a home game between friends, and then slowly I went to Macau and started playing cash game and MTTs.

SMP: Any advice to young aspiring poker players?

Zheng: I think my suggestion is to systematically learn the basic knowledge before entering the game, then accumulate experience through a lot of online and offline actual combat, and then use software review to improve yourself, exercise after work, and cultivate your good emotional control, accumulate enough bankroll, and make your career go more smoothly.

SMP: Thanks again and good luck for the rest of the series!

Day 1D Of The Red Dragon Championship Begins At 12:00

The Red Dragon Poker Tour Jeju II 2025 continues today, July 10, at the Landing Casino inside the luxurious Jeju Shinhwa World Resort with the fourth of five opening flights for the KR₩ 2.5 Million (~$1,815) Red Dragon Championship with a KR₩ 2 Billion (~$1,451,326) guaranteed prize pool taking center stage again. The first three flights saw 145 out of 549 players advance to Day 2 already.

The event generated a total KR₩ 2,175,953,000 (~$1,582,120) in May, with KR₩ 360,000,000 (~$250,615) going to champion Shengfa Huang, who has already been preparing for his title defense in the past few days. With one more opening flight added this time around, these records won't be standing long. We quickly caught up with Shengfa Huang - who only learned how to play poker when the pandemic hit - during Flight A:

SMP: How has winning the RDPT Main Event impacted your career or life in general?

Huang: It doesn't have any impact. I may go out to play more games in the future.

SMP: Where did you spend your winnings?

Huang: Eat, drink, play, buy, but spent nothing really.

SMP: Did you continue playing poker after your win, or do you return to your previous life?

Huang: I continue to play poker, it is my favorite pastime.

SMP: How do you handle the pressure of playing against more experienced, professional poker players?

Huang: No pressure, because I don't know anyone.

SMP: What surprised you most about the live poker experience?

Huang: There are a lot of people playing!

Entering players have a 40,000 starting stack to work with, worth 200 times the opening blinds, intervals are at a comfortable 40 minutes and late registration will be open until the end of level 9 and the day concludes at the end of level 12.

SMP Live Updates will cover the action from start to finish.
