John Duthie
John Duthie is a legendary figure in the poker world, known both as a high-stakes winner and a visionary businessman. Originally from Yorkshire, England, he spent years working as a successful television director before forever changing the game by creating the European Poker Tour. Duthie is famously remembered for winning one of the first million-pound prizes in poker history, a feat that helped him launch a new era of televised tournaments. Even as a busy executive and tour president, he has remained a feared competitor at the tables for over two decades, proving that he has the heart of a true player.

Biography & Poker Background
John Duthie was born in 1958 in England and spent much of his professional life as a director for popular British TV shows like “Silent Witness” and “As If.” He didn’t start playing poker seriously until the 1990s, when he began visiting the Victoria Casino in London to play 7-card stud. He famously decided to focus more on poker after he stopped drinking, looking for a new and challenging way to spend his time.
His biggest contribution to the game happened in 2004 when he came up with the idea for the EPT . Legend has it he had a “eureka moment” while taking a bath, realizing that Europe needed its own elite tournament series to rival those in America. He served as the CEO of the tour for many years, helping it grow into the richest poker tour in Europe. Later in his career, he took on a major role as the president of partypoker LIVE, continuing his work of bringing high-quality poker events to players all over the world.
Play Style & Strategy
John Duthie is known for a fearless and old-school style of play. Because he grew up playing before the era of computer solvers, he relies heavily on his instincts and his ability to read people. He is particularly strong in heads-up play, where his background in television directing, spending hours watching people’s small movements and expressions, gives him a unique edge in understanding his opponents’ intentions.
His strategy is built on tenacity and experience. Whether he is playing a high-roller event or a deep-stack tournament, he is known for being extremely difficult to push out of a pot. Duthie has always described himself as a “player first,” and he brings a level of passion to the table that many younger pros admire. He isn’t afraid to make big bluffs or tough calls, often trusting his gut feeling over what the “math” might suggest is the standard play.
