Ross Coveney Leads as Australian Poker Cup Reaches Final Table

Day 2 of the Australian Poker Cup at WPT Australia 2026 has come to a close at The Star Sydney, with just nine players remaining from the 441 entries. The tournament generated a prize pool of AUD 441,000 ($317,520), with the eventual champion set to take home AUD 83,740 ($60,293), a AUD 1,500 WPT Prime Championship seat in Las Vegas, and the trophy.

Leading the way heading into the final day is Ireland's Ross Coveney with 5,660,000. Coveney built a huge stack during the latter stages of Day 2 and will return with more than 20 big blinds separating him from his nearest rival.

Sitting second is Sam Pantos with 4,365,000, while David Hirst, helped by a straight flush in the first level, rounds out the top three with 2,615,000. Matthew Maks is close behind with 2,505,000, with Yoad Agmon (1,835,000) the only other player returning with more than 30 big blinds.

Also returning for the final day are Filip Radic (1,635,000), Ailen Ji (1,595,000) and Gongli Li (1,320,000), while Daniel Tolomeo will bring up the rear with 635,000, worth 11 big blinds.

Day 2 Action

Of the 98 players who returned for Day 2, most left with nothing to show for their efforts. For one player, however, a brutal beat on the bubble made the agony of coming so close to the money even worse.

On the direct bubble, Todor Kondevski found himself all-in for just 35,000 versus Pantos. Kondevski was in a great position with jacks against sixes, and remained ahead through the flop and turn, leaving Pantos needing one of just two cards on the river to send everyone into the money.

One of those two outs duly arrived, sending a mixture of groans and celebrations around the tournament area. Kondevski could only raise his hands to the heavens in disbelief as he became the unfortunate bubble boy, while the remaining 56 players celebrated locking up at least AUD 2,000.

From there, Pantos's stack grew even more. He later sent Liang Wang to the rail with pocket aces to move up to the one-million mark, before becoming one of the biggest stacks at the final table by picking off Maks with third pair when ten remained.

Coveney also began to pull away from the rest of the players, helped by sending Matthew Jones to the rail in 11th place. Jones' pocket eights were dominated by Coveney's pocket jacks, which improved to quads on the river to position Coveney as the chip leader for the final day.

Some of those who made deep runs but fell short of the final table included Ken Demlakian (19th), Tolly Sakellariou (22nd) and Ian Logan (23rd). Robert Cobain departed in 12th after losing a flip against Tolomeo, while Jones followed him out the door in 11th.

All remaining players have locked up AUD 8,700 ($6,264), while the eventual champion will walk away with AUD 83,740 ($60,293) and the Trophy.

Cards will be back in the air on Monday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m., with 29 minutes and 43 seconds remaining in Level 26. Blinds will resume at 30,000/60,000 with a 60,000 big blind ante.

The final table will also be streamed on a delay via Twitch and Facebook, allowing viewers around the world to follow every hand as the Australian Poker Cup crowns its champion.

Maks was in a good spot to knock out two opponents, but the K♦ K♥ A♠ flop had other ideas as Ji paired his ace.

Rees had a gutshot to Broadway, which he needed to hit in order to survive. However, his wish didn't come true as the 3♣ 2♣ runout meant he hit the rail in tenth, as Ji more than doubled up in the final hand of the night.

Pantos Picks Off Maks' River Raise With Third Pair

Sam Pantos raised to 150,000 under the gun, with Matthew Maks calling on the button and Ailen Ji defending from the big blind.

Ji checked the 5♥ 9♠ Q♣ flop, and Pantos bet 200,000. Maks called, while Ji folded.

A second barrel to the tune of 250,000 came from Pantos on the A♣ turn. Again, Maks called.

The 3♠ completed the board, with Pantos settling on the same bet of 250,000. Maks raised to 800,000, and Pantos quickly called.

Maks immediately winced and said, "Nice call," prompting Pantos to reveal T♥ 9♥ for just third pair, leaving Maks and the rest of the table stunned by the call.

When the 7♣ completed the board on the river, Maks bet 900,000, which more than covered the 550,000 that Rees had behind.

Matthew Jones made it 425,000 to go from the cutoff, and Ross Coveney jammed the small blind with the biggest stack at the table.

When it got back to Jones, he said, "You know what, I'm happy with eleventh. I'll call," putting in his last 1,000,000.

Coveney tabled pocket jacks, and Jones jokingly said, "Wait, can I fold now?" After some laughs, Jones tabled his cards.

Jones was in bad shape and needed a date with an eight to keep his chances of making the final table alive.

Coveney improved even further to quads on the J♠ river, and Jones wished the players good luck as he exited the tournament area in 11th place, bringing the tournament into hand-for-hand again on the final table bubble.

Sam Pantos was very pleased with himself after he just picked off a bluff from Matthew Maks.

The full board of 3♠ 6♠ 8♣ 4♥ A♥ was already laid out on the table with around 700,000 in the pot when Maks fired 450,000 from the big blind.

Pantos was on the button and after he mulled it over, he called.

Maks flashed J♣ 9♥ for a bluff, while Pantos won the pot with a pair of fives holding 5♠ 5♦.

"You've done it to me a few times now," said Pantos to Maks.

"That was a crazy call," continued Pantos to himself.

The 6♣ T♣ 7♥ flop checked to Giordani, and he continuation-bet for 105,000. Smith called before Jones put his foot on the gas and check-shoved for 750,000.

Giordani got out of the way, and Jones went to show his cards, not realizing Smith was still in the hand.

Another player at the table quickly stopped Jones from revealing his hand, and after a bit of a tank, Smith folded, preserving his stack of 600,000.

While Jones was pulling in the pot, he spotted the Somuchpoker blog team reporting on the hand and joked, "You can read about this online, so everyone can see how shit I play."

The Australian Poker Cup resumes at 12:30 p.m. local time today inside The Star Sydney, with the penultimate day of the opening event at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Australia 2026 festival set to play down towards the final table.

Across three starting flights, a total of 441 entries were recorded, generating a prize pool of AUD 441,000. A total of players will return for Day 2, with both playing their largest stack and their smaller stack being removed from play.

Leading the way is Australia's Eddy Hosni, who amassed 731,000 during Day 1a. Ricardo Bono sits second with 644,000, while Day 1c chip leader Darren Rees rounds out the top three with 552,000. Sam Pantos (530,000), Frederick Williams (453,000), Joshua Guo (448,000), Stephane Fontes (445,000), Sasha Skalrud (441,000), Khuynh Nguyen (413,000), and David Hirst (405,000) make up the remainder of the top ten.

With only 56 places set to be paid, a large portion of the returning field will still leave empty-handed.
