Joel Singam Takes Down MYR 400k GTD Deepstack for Sixth Poker Dream Title

The Poker Dream 25 MYR 400k GTD Deepstack Event drew a total of 248 players over four starting flights played out on July 26 high in the Malaysian clouds at Genting Highlands.

A total prize pool of MYR 400,000 (~USD 100k) was on offer, with MYR 90,500 (~USD 22,625) going to the eventual Champion, Malaysia’s Joel Singam.

Singam defeated Singapore’s Benn Khek Beng Ng in a one-sided heads-up battle to secure his name in the Poker Dream history books. This win marks Singam’s sixth Poker Dream title, and with this being his largest Poker Dream cash to date takes his lifetime earnings to just shy of the USD 600k mark.

37 players returned on July 27 after bagging up chips from one of the four starting flights held throughout the previous day.

All returning players were already in the money and guaranteed MYR 3,900 (~USD 975), but all were certainly eyeing up the final table payouts that were on offer.

Singam came into the day as the chip leader with a massive 300k advantage over his nearest rival Georgii Klenin. Klenin did manage to take the lead away from Singam early on in the day, and both made the final table, but Klenin faded away and ended up being sent home in ninth place.

Play was fast and furious from the off, and in just over two hours of play the field was reduced to the final two tables.

With the final table approaching and the bigger pay packets on offer for reaching the final table, the players tightened their belts a bit to secure themselves a spot on the prestigious Poker Dream stage and final table.

Ng went on a tear nearing the final table, climbing up the chip counts after he got a massive boost to his stack in a monster pot against Klenin. Ng getting paid off on the river by Klenin’s pocket rockets after rivering the nut flush.

The final table of nine was reached after about four hours of play when Isaac Phua was sent home as the final table bubble boy, his jam with pocket eights not being able to hold against Yujia Ding’s ace-nine.

After sending Phua packing, Ding came into the final table as chip leader, but he had Ryan Kan in close pursuit and a host of players not too far behind Kan, so it really was anyone’s title to be grabbed.

Klenin was on a slippery slope leading into the final table, having run into numerous outdraws, and he was the first to be sent home in ninth place when he called off Singam with a flush draw and couldn’t hit.

Pratik Jain, after nearly being blinded out in the final table run-in and coming in as one of the short stacks, then went on a heater and started to build his stack up nicely. He got a much needed double up when his jam with Jack-ten got there against Kan’s ace-eight.

Ronald Haverkamp, who never really got anything going all day, was next to be sent home in eighth spot, his jam with ace-ten running into Kan’s ace-king suited. Even though Haverkamp hit his ten, it also made Kan Broadway to send Haverkamp packing.

Jain then stormed into the chip lead, finding a double with pocket kings against Kan’s ace-queen.

Kan was then left on the short stack and didn’t manage to turn things around, being sent home in seventh place with his button jam with nine-seven finding two callers and getting no help at all.

Jain then built on his chip lead, sending Jin Xiang Ang to the rail in sixth place, his ace-eight hitting two pair on the river to send Ang home in a brutal fashion.

Jain looked like he was running away with the title after he pulled further ahead by ending Danyang Wang’s hopes. Jain served up death by quads with his ace-ten against Wang’s pocket fours.

It all went downhill from there for Jain though, after he doubled up Singam, whose button jam with king-queen got there against Jain’s ace-jack.

Ding was next to be sent to the cage in fourth place, unfortunate that his pocket fives ran into Benn Khek Beng Ng’s pocket nines and couldn’t improve.

Jain couldn’t turn things around and was sent to the rail as the bronze medalist, unfortunate that his ace-king got outdrawn by Singam’s ace-ten.

Singam started heads-up play with a near four-to-one chip lead over Ng, and even though Ng got a double up, it was always going to be one-way traffic.

Ng didn’t last much longer after his double, and the final hand saw Singam’s king-ten hit two pair against Ng’s ace-four, sending Ng to the rail as the valiant runner-up.

Singam pulled off the wire-to-wire win to get his hands on his sixth Poker Dream trophy along with the handsome first-place prize of MYR 90,500 (~USD 22,625) to edge him even closer to the USD 600k in lifetime earnings mark.

Joel Singam has overcome a 248-entry field and defeated Benn Khek Beng Ng in a brief heads-up battle to claim his sixth Poker Dream title and MYR 90,500 first-place prize.

The victory marks a new high score for Singam in Poker Dream events, adding to his over $500k in live-tournament earnings and further securing his place as a top grinder in the Asia tournament scene.

After losing a couple of small pots preflop, Benn Khek Beng Ng limped on the button and Joel Singam checked his option.

Both players checked on the 3♠ Q♣ 7♦ flop and 7♥ turn, but Singam bet 300,000 on the 6♦ river.

Ng looked him up and Singam turned over 8♠ 6♠ for sixes-up. Ng couldn't beat it and dropped to his last 850,000 as a result of the hand.

After being left short-stacked, Pratik Jain was forced all in from the big blind. Benn Khek Beng Ng limped from the button, only for Joel Singam to move all in from the small blind, having both players covered.

Ng thought for a while and did the calculations before he released his hand, claiming he held pocket nines.
