Malaysia Open Champion Chee Sheng TanChee Sheng Tan has overcome a 1,657-entry field and defeated Zhuo Ren Lim in a surprisingly long heads-up battle, given the shallow stacks in play, to take down Event #1: Malaysia Open for MYR 261,200 (~USD 65,300).
It was a breakout performance for Tan, who had only two recorded cashes totaling just over $5,000 prior to his victory, according to The Hendon Mob. Despite entering the final table with the third-shortest stack, Tan was able to navigate his way to his first-ever live poker title and the right to be called a Poker Dream champion.
"I'm really happy. My friends have been supporting me the whole way, and that helped keep me grounded," Tan shared with Poker Dream host Veronica shortly after his victory. "Honestly, when you're playing for 12 or 14 hours and you have people cheering you on from the rail, it really gives you peace of mind."
Tan's victory was made all the more impressive given that his goal wasn't necessarily to win.
"Just survive and make it into the money," Tan explained concerning his mindset during the tournament. "Yeah, play it safe... I just watched everyone else fight each other. I waited until they finished."

Just 215 players returned to Genting Highlands to compete for the Gold Dragon Trophy and it didn't take long for the chips to start flying. Within the first three levels of play, more than half the returning field had already been eliminated with the average chip stack hovering around a shallow 20 big blinds.
While the short-stacked players fell, a few players emerged with big stacks - notably Jin Hean Tey, who got a large boost after making quads against Pei Jin Ernest Lim in what would become a recurrent theme.
Jin Hean TeyWei Chuang Lum showed his poker chops by making a couple of correct hero calls, including one with ace-high against Benn Khek Beng Ng to grow his stack to nearly twice the average.
Vorajit Thajulmaneechot found himself on the brink of elimination early on after having his aces cracked by the current leader in the Dream Player of the Year race - Eugene Zhou - to be left with less than two big blinds. Amazingly, Julmaneechot scored a series of double ups to bring his stack of 60,000 all the way to over 3,000,000, thanks largely in part to drilling the river with ace-jack against Peng Fei Kim's pocket nines with three tables remaining.
Vorajit ThajulmaneechotWith escalating blinds forcing the action, Zhou found himself short and shoved with queen-nine only to be looked up by Wan Ning Hazel Tan holding ace-five. Tan ended up flopping trips to end Zhou's run a couple spots shy of the final two tables.
The knockouts continued to come at a brisk pace, with most resulting from preflop shoves that got called and wound up second-best. In one of the more brutal eliminations, Benn Khek Beng Ng and Jun Hui Andy Ng both flopped sets, with Benn Ng holding bottom set against Jun Ng's top set to be eliminated.
Benn Khek Beng NgDespite his epic rally, Thajulmaneechot bubbled the final table after blinding down and shoving with king-ten only to get run down by Lum's jack-nine.
Tey was among the short stacks entering the final table, but almost immediately doubled up after hitting quads for a second time holding pocket kings against Teck Hong Ho's ace-queen.
Following the double up, Hazel Tan became the first player to be eliminated on the final table after flopping a pair and flush draw against Ng and Cong Wang and committing her stack. Unfortunately for Tan, Ng had flopped top set and held to claim the first knockout of the final table.
Wan Ning 'Hazel' TanWang followed Tan out the door in eighth after running ace-king into Chee Tan's aces, and Ho was eliminated shortly thereafter in seventh by being forced all in with jack-six against Tey's pocket tens.
Tan's run good continued after cracking Ng's kings with pocket nines to bring the final table down to five players.
Lum, who entered the final table with the chip lead, was unable to gain any real momentum and found himself short five-handed. He eventually took a stand holding jack-eight, but fell against Tey's ace-queen to get sent out in fifth place.
Yi Xuan Fong expressed he was all too happy to ladder his way into a top-four finish before being nearly forced all in from the big blind. Fong called a raise from Tey with rags and failed to improve, scoring another KO for Tey setting up three-handed play.
Yi Xuan FongLim, Tan, and Tey jousted back and forth until Tey took the lead by making quads and getting paid for the third time in a pot against Tan. However, Tey's good fortune finally ran out as Lim doubled through him twice in rapid succession to leave him on the short stack. Tey eventually bowed out in third after getting forced all in from the big blind and falling to Tan, who made trips with eight-deuce.
Heads-up between Lim and Tan began with under 40 big blinds in play; however, both players were content to play small ball - leading to an extended match despite their shallow stacks.
Zhuo Ren LimAfter being down by a nearly 2:1 deficit, Lim was able to snag the lead from Tan after a series of smaller pots went his way. However, Tan scored a key double up through Lim holding king-jack against Lim's jack-seven. In the hand, both players flopped an open-ended straight draw, but Tan also held top pair to boot. Tan shoved and got looked up by Lim, who couldn't draw to a chop - leaving him on the short stack.
Not long after, Tan shoved preflop with jack-seven and Lim called all in with king-trey. Lim was favored, but the runout paired Tan's jack to eliminate Lim and put an end to the tournament.

Heads up on a board of 7♣ 5♥ K♦ 3♠with over 100,000 already in the middle, Chen Ting Yap had a bet of 70,000 in front of him from middle position and was faced with a shove of 180,000 from Wee Yap Poo, who was in the big blind.
Yap used up a time extension as he contemplated his decision, but eventually stuck in a call to put Poo at risk.
Wee Yap Poo: 6♣ 4♦
Chen Ting Yap: K♥ 9♥
Poo had turned the nuts with a straight, leaving Yap already drawing dead.
An irrelevant 9♦ improved Yap to a second-best two pair and Poo was awarded a double up at the start of Day 2.

The Day 2 finale of Event #1: Malaysia Open (MYR 1,500,000 GTD) has arrived following eight starting flights, with just 215 players returning to Genting Highlands of the 1,657 total entrants to compete for the title and coveted Poker Dream Gold Dragon Trophy.
Leading the way heading into Day 2 is Wan Ning Hazel Tan, who emerged as the overall chip leader after bagging an astounding 1,030,000 during Day 1/E, becoming the only player to eclipse the seven-figure mark. More than 300,000 chips behind is Ming Kiat Chock with 736,000, while Singapore's Chee Siang Theng rounds out the top three with 732,000.

A bit further down the leaderboard is the current leader of the 2026 Dream Player of the Year race, Eugene Zhou, who will bring a well-above average stack of 325,000 to battle with on the felt. Coco Zeng (130,000) sits in second-place in the DPOY race and first in the Ladies Player of the Year race and will be looking to run her stack up for another deep run.
The defending champion, Win Kit Damien Woo, was a no-show for this event, meaning a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned.
The prize pool reached MYR 1,730,020 (~USD 422,850) by the time the last flight was completed - solidly surpassing the MYR 1,500,000 guarantee. Everyone remaining has already secured a min-cash of MYR 2,800 (~USD 684), but all eyes are on the MYR 262,000 (~USD 64,038) top prize that will be awarded the the winner. Here's a look at the payouts heading into Day 2:

Day 2 will begin on Level 19, which features 5,000/10,000 blinds with a 10,000 big-blind ante. Levels will last 30 minutes each for the duration of the tournament with 15-minute breaks being held after every four levels.
With the pressure mounting and a place at the final table within reach, every decision will carry more weight as the remaining players battle for the title.
