Flight A Ends With 47 Players Led By David Sommer

Flight A of the APPT Championship ₱60M GTD is a wrap! At the end of the scheduled 11 levels of play, with each level running for 60 minutes each, only 47 players remained out of the 144 that entered.

Setting a very high bar for the next flight was Germany's David Sommer with a stack of 412,500 (275 bb). Sommer held the top spot during the last three levels of the day. In addition to knocking out multiple players that included cracking Czardy Rivera's kings, one of his stunning hands was tabling a straight with 3-4 suited over two players with top pair aces.

Also advancing with a healthy 120,000 (80 bb) stack was Vietnam’s Trong Hieu Ngo, the event’s reigning champion. Joining him into Day 2 is 2025 APPT Manila Main Event champion Justin Ong, who jumped to an early advantage then took a hit after a failed bluff against Japan's John Matsuda. This boosted Matsuda into second rank with 350,500 (233 bb) while Ong closed with 153,000 (102 bb).

Other APPT champions moving forward include Alexander Puchalski (Cambodia 2022), Christopher Mateo (Cambodia 2024), Hai Ha Tran (Cambodia 2025), and newly crowned APPT Open champion Tak Sin Alex Chong.

Action resumes tomorrow, Friday, October 24 for Flight B. This will be the last chance to enter. Somuchpoker will return with updates throughout the day starting at 12PM.

Three-way preflop ballooned the pot to 18,000 with more getting dumped in on a flop 9♠ 6♠ 8♦ . Starting with small blind aggressor Craig Jones, he bet 8,000, big blind Seunghyuk Jung raised 25,000, David Sommer three-bet 40,000, then back to Jones who tanked before firing 105,000. This was enough to cover Jung's stack while Sommer got out of the way.

Jones flipped over 8♠ 8♥ set, Jung had the nuts with T♥ 7♥ . Jones still had outs for the boat but the board refused to give in turning a runner runner 5♦ and Q♠ .

The Q♣ 4♦ T♣ flop quickly improved Chong while Ishiwatari was down to just four outs with a 16% win-rate. That apparently was all he needed with the turn J♣ producing one of the jacks for broadway. Chong still had outs - 23% to retake it but the 9♥ ruined his plans to pay the double up.

After an open from under the gun, it folded to the button Hogyun Kang who fired a three-bet of 6500. To his immediate left, small blind Daniel Lei also liked what he was dealt and four-bet to 15,500. Much too much, utg folded while Kang was willing to continue after a brief pause.

With the pot now heavy with 36 bigs, more came pouring in on a board that felted A♦ 6♠ T♣ with 8000 coming out of Lei's stack. Kang called again. This brought the 9♠ on the turn where Lei bet 12,000 onto a pot of 50,000 and this time Kang tossed his hand in the muck.

Thomas Lee faced a 2200 raise from hijack player Gi Boum Kim and jammed his last 21,600. Two spots over on the big blind, William Ysmael quickly joined the shove-fest sending the decision back to Kim who tanked for a long time. Kim finally folded and said he had pocket Jacks.

When Ysmael revealed Q♦ Q♠ , Lee flipped over A♠ Q♣ and said, "why does my kicker have to be a queen?" But it proved to be very helpful as the board ran T♦ J♥ 3♥ 8♥ K♠ for broadway. Upon seeing the flop Kim was unhappy to have folded then quickly changed his mind for having preserved his chips.

The turn brings a face-card of K♦ which Lee seemed to like and fired 25,000. This didn't scare away Kim who called prompting Lee to check the river 2♥ . Kim checked back. Lee showed Q♥ Q♣ for the win. Kim had lower pockets.

Battle of who's in charge and who takes it down began with a raise from under the gun Ilsung Kwon for 2500 that was called by cutoff Edilberto Gopez. Two spots over, small blind Sriharsha Doddapaneni three-bets 11,000 and it's three-way to the flop with only the big blind getting out of the way.

Two taps open after a board comes 2♦ 3♥ 9♥ leaving it up to Gopez to decide. He bets 8000 which gets the preflop aggressor to fold while Kwon slides out the call. This bring a river 8♠ which is again checked by Kwon and bet by Gopez for 17,000. Kwon goes deep in the tank until he finally surrenders his hand to the muck.

Youhyun Kim opened 1000 from hijack with Anton Iakimenko calling from cutoff. On the button, Seitaro Aso three-bet to 3500 however it still didn’t thin the field with big blind Kjetil Kemi also came along, making it a four-way pot.

After the flop landed 4♠ J♠ 6♦ , action erupted. First Kim led for 1500, Iakimenko raised to 7500, Seitaro called, and Kemi bowed out, then Kim then shoved for 31,000. Iakimenko reluctantly folded having to give up his 10.5K stake in the pot, while Seitaro made the call with a covering stack.

A battle of raises erupted preflop starting with 600 from button Mikhail Katkov. From small blind David Erquiaga three-bet 5x to 3000. Katkov checked his hand again then four-bet 8000. Erquiaga snap-jammed and still wasn't able to induce a fold, instead Katkov snap-called.

It was a flip with Katkov holding J♠ J♥ and Erquiaga with A♦ K♠ . The board ran out 5♠ 2♦ 6♥ 8♥ 6♠ . Erquiaga quickly got up and said it was just his second hand. We will likely see him re-enter.

Pots at Table 3 have been ballooning in this opening level with aggressive bets initiated by Justin Ong and Lu Zhou. Catching a few hands, the first one had Khant Naing raise from under the gun for 600, repopped by button Zhou to 2000, called by big blind Ong and Naing.

Blind check from Ong was also checked by Naing and Zhou wanted to take it down right there with a bet of 3600 but Ong called while Naing let go. The heat was followed by two checks on the turn 9♦ then Ong led out 5500 on the J♦ river which was good for the win as Zhou folded.

A few hands later, Zhou opened 600 from middle position, Naing three-bet 2000 from small blind, Zhou fired back a hefty 9500 four-bet, and Naing seized the heat with a call. When the flop ran K♠ 9♥ 3♦ , Zhou continued for 3500 and Naing check-called to take them to fourth street where another 8000 barrel from Zhou on the 9♣ turn card. This time Naing believed and gave up his stake in the pot.

Immediately following that hand, Ong opened then three-bet 5100. Eduard Burd punched back with a four-bet shove that well covered Ong who opted to fold. Ong is now below half starting stack.

Here are some important details to know:
