In other news, two days prior, Chris Brewer tweeted he would not be attending the US$ 250,000 buy in Super High Roller No Limit Hold’em bracelet event having tested positive for Covid-19. Due to this, Chris Vogelsang took the initiative to draw up a contract that would allow players attending Day 2 to be refunded their buy in if they test positive. Most agreed and everyone tested negative. The event is down to five players led by Adrian Mateos with over half the chips in play; all are now in the money. Top prize is over US$ 3.2 Million.

It was a lengthy title chase at Event #78: $10,000 Razz Championship with an extra day needed to determine the winner. Despite Everett Carlton’s impressive recovery from just four big bets left, it was Benny Glaser clinching the title, the US$ 274,693 first prize, and his fourth career gold bracelet. This was Glaser’s series fourth final table having also placed 2nd at Event #2: $25,000 H.O.R.S.E., 9th at Event #40: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E Championship, and 3rd at Event #49: $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship. He became the first player to rein it in for the UK, and the 9th player to win his fourth career bracelet in this series. Glaser’s prior bracelet wins were two in 2016 – $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better and $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship – and his first in 2015 at $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw. The latest victory boosted his total live earnings to over US$ 2.9 Million.

While the event turned up 109 entries for a prize pool of US$ 1,016,425, it had a dragging start with only 17 players seated. This prompted a tweet from Daniel Negreanu,

“I think we should speed up the structure for the early levels to the point where people think it’s worth showing up on time. Step by step, start by just eliminating level 1 500-1000 and start at 600-1200. And so on… “

Among the attendees was 6x bracelet winner Jeff Lisandro, seen for the first time at the ongoing games. He bagged up the Day 1 chip lead however failed to reach the money round. Once the final table was reached, six out of the nine players were multi WSOP champions and most were multi final tableists. After series winner Bradley Ruben finished 9th, 16x bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth took 8th for his sixth final table, the most by any player in the series. This catapulted Hellmuth to second rank in the WSOP Player of the Year race. Other multi final table players were 9x winner Erik Seidel (7th), 4x winner John Monnette (5th), and 2x winner Yuri Dzivielevski (3rd). For ring holder, Everett Carlton, he earned his 13th series cash but was denied the gold by Benny Glaser by one spot.

The newest bracelet event in the lineup was the unique $1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No Limit Hold’em Freezeout. As tribute to all the Hall of Famers, any inductee eliminated, the winning player earned a bounty reward. Making their appearance were Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Barbara Enright, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, and the newly inducted Eli Elezra. Unfortunately for them, they all fell before the money round. Brunson’s bounty went to Ari Oxman whose pocket Jacks held against AhKh. Gianluca Speranza won Greenstein’s bounty on a bad beat when pocket Queens made a set to crack pocket Aces. Another attendee was WSOP emcee/ actor Vince Vaughn who was outdrawn by India’s Kunal Patni. Day 1 closed with 63 remaining out of the 468 entry field, and Philippine player Marc Rivera as chip leader.

Day 2 action was fierce as players tumbled fast. Among the Asians that reached the money were Yueqi Zhu (18th), Sriharsha Doddapaneni (19th), Christian Pham (22nd), and Abhinav Iyer (23rd). The final table was formed with every player seeking their first gold bracelet. The most WSOP decorated player was triple ring holder Dylan Wilkerson who exited in 8th place. The day ended with Germany’s Ole Schemion bagging nearly half the chips in play and Rivera down to just 13 BB.

Schemion continued to crush on Day 3. He eliminated four out of his five opponents starting with ring winner Jerry Wong in 6th place . After Rivera cleaned out James Alexander in 5th place with JdJc over As7s, Rivera went on a downward spin that eventually saw him lose all his chips to SchemionRivera’s 4th place finish was the deepest run by a player from the Philippines. Next on Schemion’s chopping block was Giovani Torre in 3rd place to bring about heads up against  Benjamin Underwood. Ahead 7:1 in chips, it was a fast finish. The final hand was Schemion Ad5s trips over KhJd on a board AsAc10c7c4h. Schemion became the second player from Germany to win at the series following in the footsteps of newly crowned Main Event champion Koray Aldemir

The 50th first time winner of the ongoing series was Jason Wheeler at Event #81: $800 No Limit Hold’em Deepstack. Wheeler outlasted the 1,921 entry field to lock up the US$ 204,274 first prize and the coveted gold bracelet. Wheeler began his gold hunt in 2009, and nearly came close with a runner up finish at that series $1,500 No Limit Hold’em. In 2016, he won his first WSOP circuit ring. With his latest win, Wheeler boosted his total WSOP earnings to over US$ 1.5 Million.

The two day event saw 289 players earn a piece of the US$ 1,352,384 prize pool. Among the 12 Asian players that reached the money were bracelet winners Carlos Chang (92nd – US$ 2,060) and Sung Joo Hyun (119th – US$ 1,872). Other finishers were Hayato Kitajima (22nd), Jongwook Lee (30th), Siddharth Karia (82nd), Shashank Jain (88th), Raghav Bansal (97th), Kyoungmi Kim (127th) Aura Otsuka (150th), Muskan Sethi (157th), Kazuyoshi Miyashita (170th), and Kento Takagi (244th).

Bracelet winner Will Givens brought in the largest stack into Day 2 and finished 39th. The final table had four ring winners and one bracelet winner, Portugal’s Diogo Veiga who was on his second final table. Veiga fell to Wheeler in 3rd place to ensure a first time WSOP champion. Wheeler was ahead of Julian Velasquez at heads up with well over 2:1 in chips, however, the Colombian came charging to steal the top spot and nearly shipped it when his Ac4c flopped a straight 3d2s5s.  At the runout, the turn Kc and river 4d, turned Wheeler’s 6d6c to a higher straight to reclaim the lead. From there, Wheeler closed it out with pocket Aces over Ace-Two offsuit. While the champ earned his first bracelet, Velasquez banked his largest WSOP score of US$ 126,252.
