For Leonardo Mattos “Babaehduro”, a player with no prior live tournament WSOP cashes, this victory was a golden dream fulfilled. Mattos survived the 1,061 entry field of the WSOP #59: $2,500 Double Stack No Limit Hold’em to clinch his first major title and largest career score of $ 399,046.75. In addition, he was awarded a $ 15,000 WSOP Europe Package.

Prior to his triumph, Mattos kicked off his WSOP Online run on a high note. He bested 886 runners of the WSOP Side Event: $ 400 Sunday Deepstack to pick up the $ 56,046.56 first prize. This was to be his second known five figure career score with his first of $ 98,713 earned in November 2019 at the Brazilian Series of Poker Main Event where he finished in 4th place. Putting all his recent wins and live earnings together, he now sits with over $ 600K.

Recapping the action, the event was expected to be a lengthy one as players started with a very healthy stack worth 200 times the opening big blind. Eight and a half hours in, the final table was reached, led by Pedro Madeira “mrsweets29”. All the finalists were hunting down their first WSOP title. Two were known pros Christopher Puetz “RambaZamba” and Yiannis Liperis “GreekFreaker”. For Puetz, he was fairly fresh off a huge victory in February, taking down the 2020 WPT Germany Main Event for $ 292K. Looking forward, Puetz improved on that score today earning $ 298.3K for runner up.

Early action was dominated by the chip leader Madeira, eliminating the first three players. Liperis’s A-9 was dominated throughout by A-Q; Fabiano Kovalski “MarkyAurelio”’ pocket twos couldn’t crack pocket Kings; and short stacked Kevin Gibson risked it with K-4 offsuit only to fail to pocket sixes. During that time, Antonio Pedro “nanqtf” got very lucky on Madeira with his pocket Queens turned quads to survive against pocket Kings. However, despite the break, Antonio still tumbled in 5th place with Mattos collecting. Madeira then amassed over half the chips in play by railing Nethanel Klein “natykkk” in 4th place.

With a mountain of chips at his disposal, Madeira entered nearly every hand, causing him to lose two big pots to each of his opponents. On Puetz’s second scoop, Madeira dropped to the shortest stack. Puetz took the lead for the first time after terminating the Madeira fire in 3rd place.

Up 2:1 against Mattos, Puetz climbed to a 4:1 advantage with Qc2s full house to Mattos’s As4d. Mattos stayed resilient and evened it up after winning the first all in showdown with Ac8h dominating As2d throughout. Puetz pushed ahead again leading to a second all-in situation. Once again Mattos won it with Ac7d over Ad5c to take the lead. Using the momentum, Mattos widened the gap to 4:1. Puetz risked his remaining chips with 9h8s, Mattos called with Kd6s, the board ran empty and so did Puetz.
