The first event, which will be held on Dec. 22-29, 2016 at the Holiday Palace Casino & Resort in Poipet, Cambodia, is the WPT National Thailand. Despite being held in the Cambodian Region, the event is named so probably because it is meant to attract players from Thailand which borders Cambodia via Poipet. In a country where gambling is illegal, Poipet is normally the only avenue by which Thai nationals are able to play in a casino. This would be a great opportunity to be able to attract numerous players from the Indochinese Peninsula to play a poker tournament.

The WPT National Thailand Main Event will have a buy-in of THB 37,400 (approx. $1,100) with 3 starting flights. On the 24th & 25th of December, Main Event play will stop but side events will continue to run. The players’ party will also be held in time for the holiday season.

The 2nd Event, The WPT National Cambodia, will run from January 2-13, 2017 at the Queenco Hotel & Casino in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. And like the first event, the Main Event of the tourney will have 3 starting flights but will have a buy-in of $1,485. Both events have a re-entry format which allows players to re-enter on each starting flight, making a maximum total of 6 entries per player permissible.

“This new partnership bringing two WPT National events to the Cambodian region allows the World Poker Tour to continue its global expansion and showcases Asia’s growing demand for major poker events across a burgeoning region,” said Adam Pliska, CEO of the World Poker Tour. “With WPT National Thailand and WPT National Cambodia being held in close proximity to one another just days apart, players will have an easy opportunity to play in two world-class poker tournaments at beautiful resorts. The WPT looks forward to these events being the first of many in the region.”

In a Peninsula where poker is hard to find, this may be a breakthrough event that may open doors for other opportunities to offer the game of poker.

The WPT was acquired by Ourgame International Holdings Ltd, a card and board game operator in China, in 2015.
