WPT Cambodia top stories and Day 7/8 winners; exciting POF race

Action packed Day 8 at World Poker Tour (WPT) Cambodia as another six winners were added to the champions list. With 24 events out of the 44-game schedule now completed, the WPT Player of the Festival race is heating up. The top three are very close in chips and plenty of chances for others to catch up. All the action takes place at NagaWorld Phnom Penh. Here are the highlights.

The excitement of Day 8 concluded with three players rising up the ranks to steal the top spots in the WPT Player of the Festival leaderboard.

Philippine’s Marc Rivera: On Day 7, Rivera finished 2nd at the Super High Roller then improved on it on Day 8 with a victory at the Megastack Action Clock, outlasting the 277-entry field. He leads the race with 925 points.

South Africa’s Marc Joseph: On Day 4, Joseph bulldozed through the Championship Warm Up final table but was stopped in 2nd place to miss his chance at a first WPT title. On Day 8, Joseph dominated the final table of the 8 Max Survivor 2K Bounty, however was denied the title again in 2nd place. Joseph is running second in the POF with 900 points.

Hong Kong’s Ivan Hon Cheong Lee: On Day 4, Lee shipped the Megastack Single Day High Roller to jump into third rank in the POF race. On Day 8, he held on with his short stack to ladder up to 2nd place in the 10K Single Day Challenge. Lee is third in the race with 875 points.

Another player to watch for is Slovakia’s Andrej Desset, champion of the Mystery Bounty. Desset finished 6th in the Megastack Action Clock to sit 4th in the POF rankings with 800 points. Rounding out the top 5 is Korea’s Seongho Cho with 700 points, the only player to win two events.

ASMIATI wins back to back Ladies NLH title

Deja vu! Incredible accomplishment by Indonesia’s Asmiati at the Ladies NLH, outlasting the 28-entry field to capture the win and the USD 2,139 top cash prize. Impressively Asmiati won this event last year at this location marking this as a consecutive back-to-back takedown. Well done!

DANIEL NEILSON crushes the 10K Single Day Challenge

Australia’s Daniel Neilson emerged victorious at the 10K Single Day Challenge for his first ever WPT title. Neilson was already sporting a big stack at the final table when he went head to head against second chip leader South Africa’s Pieter De Necker who three-bet jammed with pocket fours which was not good enough to be Neilson’s pocket Kings. With a monstrous stack to before him, there was no looking back. Neilson shipped the USD 143,903 top prize.

HYEONSIK YUN overcomes a deficit to win 8 Max Survivor 2K Bounty

The 8 Max Survivor 2K Bounty title came down between the bulldozing South African Marc Joseph and Korea’s Hyeonsik Yun. Joseph was ahead 62 bb to Yun’s 7 bb. After two showdowns, with Yun winning with AdJd dominating Kh10s and KhKc over 2h2s, Yun catapulted to the lead then closed it out. The final hand, Yun shoved with 4c4h, Joseph risked with Qd2d, board ran out 6h8d8s9s3s.

Yun shipped the USD 48,818 top prize plus 7 bounties worth USD 2K each for a sweet payout of USD 62,818. Joseph pocketed USD 32,478 for runner-up plus 8 bounties (USD 16,000) for a total payday of USD 48,478.

ZACHARY SEYMOUR wins Superstack Freezeout

The Superstack Freezeout attracted a roaring 230 players for a prize pool of USD 28,906. Just under nine hours in, China’s Xuesong Wu delivered the bubble then went on to reach the final table, falling in 3rd place to USA’s Zachary David Seymour with AdQd dominating Kc9s. Seymour entered heads up against China’s Yuhang Chen on a deficit then trimmed the gap on a double up with Qs8c full house over Kh8s trips on a board 8d5dQc8hAd. He went on to win it with {KdKs staying ahead of 7h8h on a board 5d9c8s5hJd. Based on Hendon Mob, this was Seymour’s first ever live tournament win.

JAMES MENDOZA wins the 1K Hyper Turbo

Another happy moment for the Philippine contingent as James Mendoza brought down the 1K Hyper Turbo for USD 23,489. Mendoza bested the 77 entries field, defeating Australia’s Julian Warhurst at heads up to add a WPT title to his growing list of achievements. Last year was a tremendous year for Mendoza. He opened with an 11th place finish at the PokerStars Players NLH Championship for USD 300K then in the summer, nearly won a WSOP bracelet, finishing 3rd at the $3K Freezeout for a payout of USD 303K.

For those just hearing of this inaugural event, WPT Cambodia kicked off on January 17 at NagaWorld Phnom Penh running until January 30, 2024. It is the biggest festival by the brand in the region featuring at 44-game lineup.

The most anticipated event is the WPT Championship – the first WPT Main Tour in Southeast Asia – boasting a USD 1 Million guarantee. This is the largest prize pool announced by the WPT in the region. Buy in is USD 3,500. Event runs January 25 to 29, 2024.
