World Poker Tour returns to Tokyo, Japan featuring ¥100,000,000 (~$663K) guarantee – November 23 to 26
The World Poker Poker is gearing up for an electrifying poker event set against the vibrant backdrop of Tokyo, Japan. Running from November 23 to 26 is WPT Japan 2023 featuring a significant ¥100,000,000 (~$663,275) guarantee. This will be the brand’s fifth event in the country since 2017. Adding more thrill is the confirmation of legendary poker superstar Phil Ivey as one of the participants.
OnLive format: from Online to Live
WPT Japan 2023 will be conducted in a unique hybrid OnLive format, blending online and live phases. WPT Japan and several major tournament series in 2023 have acclimated to the format, giving players the flexibility to participate in online poker on Day 1 or opt for a direct late registration into Day 2, marking the initial live tournament day.
Online qualifiers are available on WPT Global. Players can enter multiple online Day 1s, increasing their chances of securing a coveted spot in the live phase. The remaining 15% of the field from each Day 1 flight will carry their stacks into the live tournament.
The buy-in remains consistent at ¥5,000 (~$33) for both live and online options. However, online participants can capitalize on securing entry online for as little as ¥1,000 (~$7). These daily qualifiers start on November 18.
The live phase of the tournament will take place at the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building Triangle Square in Tokyo starting November 23 and will run through November 26.

As mentioned, Phil Ivey is among the first players to sign up for direct entry into the live event. He is one of the world’s most well-known and versatile poker players, with live tournament triumphs in various poker games like SHOE (Stud, Holdem, Omaha, and Eight or Better). In 2017, Ivey was inaugurated into the WSOP’s Elite Poker Hall of Fame in 2017 when he turned 40.
