In just a couple of weeks, Cambodia will be a hotbed of poker action as the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) lights up NagaWorld Phnom Penh this November. Plenty of excitement surrounds this upcoming festival as it marks the first APPT event to be held in the country. It is also the second major tour to showcase its brand of poker in the capital city. Hundreds of players from around the world are expected to fly in with confidence high for another massive turnout as seen at previous events.

World class festivals at NagaWorld Phnom Penh

Back in 2019, players got a first look at the world class NagaWorld Integrated Resort in Phnom Penh with the World Poker Tour hosting an inaugural Cambodia ten-day series. The festival was a huge success, paying out over US$ 2 Million in prizes to quickly prompt another one to be scheduled. Unfortunately, the global health crisis disrupted the plans until two years later when borders reopened.

In August 2022, the WPT stirred the capital city once again, presenting its Prime series for the first time in the country. Like previous, the response was overwhelming. The Main Event hauled in an Asia tour record 1,050 entries and a prize pool of over US$ 1 Million, the largest and richest WPT open tournament in the region.

With the venue now established as a hub well suited for premium brands, the APPT’s expansion to Cambodia may not entirely come as a surprise. The tour’s strong 15-year history of delivering high caliber festivals all over Asia-Pacific has consistently been staged at top notch facilities and NagaWorld Phnom Penh fits this description to a tee.

APPT through the years

Created in 2007 by online giant PokerStars, the APPT fast became one of the most sought after tours in Asia-Pacific. Breaking ground in the Philippines, more stops were added through the years – South Korea, Macau, China, and Australia – to firmly establish its foothold in the region. At its peak, the APPT was hosting multiple festivals per season at City of Dreams Macau driving Main Event prize pools well over a million US dollars. In 2014, the APPT Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) Macau amassed over US$ 3.4 Million.

After PokerStars exited Macau in 2018, the last event of the year was held in the Philippines. For the first time, the Main Event prize pool reached US$ 1.2 Million, then further paid out a cumulative US$ 3.3 Million. The following year PokerStars moved to Okada Manila where another big festival was produced. The latest APPT Manila festival was in July, and though attendance dipped due to border restrictions, the guarantee still doubled for a Main Event prize pool of US$ 819K. In total, the festival paid out US$ 2.6 Million across 26 events.
