Chuyi Huang leads WPT Prime Taiwan 2024 Championship Event Day 2 charge

Having coursed through twelve days of play, WPT Prime Taiwan 2024 is close to wrapping up this season’s games with only nine trophies left to be awarded over the next three days. A full house was evident at CTP Asia Poker Arena, Taipei this Saturday, August 17th, with the Championship Event’s last flight running on schedule.

The US$ 1,000,000 guarantee was breached right by the first level and saw its prize pool pad further to TWD 51,054,436 (~USD 1,611,293) after a staggering turnout was seen across the final Day 1. With the numbers confirmed at a total of 1,666 entries, the record stands to be WPT Prime’s all-time largest field, surpassing its previous record of 1,644 entries at WPT Prime Liechtenstein in 2023.

The final flight on schedule drew in the strongest turnout across the three WPT Prime Taiwan Championship Event qualifying rounds with 710 entries recorded by the end of registration. Another 89 runners advanced to Day 2 with Taiwan’s Chuyi Huang stacking the highest by night’s end, at a massive 1,549,000 (129 BB) chip count to start tomorrow’s games. Huang soared to the top ranks by the last level after scoring back to back pots with no showdown. Huang went on to finish off Max Liu to signal the end of bubble time, and successfully cap the overall lead just moments later.

206 players out of the 1,666 entry field are set to return to the felt for this Sunday’s Day 2, each guaranteed a US$ 1,679 minimum payout. A longer 60 minute gameplay will be in effect as the qualified runners course through another eleven levels of play, in order to advance to the Final Day games. Event #41: Turbo Big Bounty Freezeout: Hao Lin – TWD 231,500 (~USD 7,190)

Hao Lin

The Turbo Big Bounty Freezeout side event drew in 203 entries with a long line of players waiting to be seated, having just busted from the Championship games. A fan favorite format, only fifteen levels of play was all it took before the field whittled down to 26 players (ITM), with Bien Mai delivering the bubble elimination. By the fifth hour, the final table was set with Hong Kong’s Hao Lin leading the pack, and Shintaro Mae right on his tail. It only took two deals before the first bust was seen with Tran Huy Phong on the losing end of a flip against Cheuk Him Tsang

Chip leader Lin, already stacking high, went on to bust short stacks Shintaro, and Kazuya Kojima in 7th and 8th place respectively, widening the gap even further. Cheuk Him Tsang at this point, had the most number of bounties (valued at TWD 5,000 each) and added another after his Ad9d sent Man Tik Wong’s Kc5c flying towards the muck. His momentum however, faltered shortly after a button jam saw both players on the blinds make the call. Lin, who covered both opponents, scored the double knockout with his Ah10d running a diamond flush to send both Tsang 7h7c and Naoya Yamashiro KsKc out simultaneously. Down to three handed play, Bien Mai quickly gained a boost after eliminating Manhang Tse in third, but failed to secure the title as the final hand came into play on the next deal. For the trophy victory, Lin outran Bien’s KdQc on 9d8s10h9hQh, with a rivered flush Kh7h to seal the win.

Event #42: Hyper Turbo High Roller: Weibo Ye – TWD 808,000 (~USD 25,100)

Weibo Ye wins WPT Prime Taiwan Hyper Turbo High Roller
Weibo Ye

Running only ten minutes on the clock, three and a half hours was all the remaining five players needed to reach the money, following Sung Joo Hyun’s exit by the hands of Weibo Ye. Each guaranteed a share of the TWD 2,153,400 (~USD 66,890) prize pool, Kai Cheng Hsu crashed just five minutes later after his Ah8s was left unable to hold up against Chihyuan Wang’s KsQh. While able to rake the boost, Wang found himself in for a roller coaster ride up until Youhyun Kim finished him off entirely.

Kim picked up another stack, booting Yin Wei Cheng in the process, yet lost it all in just two pots. Pumping up the aggression, Ye first off jammed with 6c9c, called by Kim with KsQc, and ran a straight on 4s10c8d10s7s to double up. The next hand saw Ye jam once more, this time with Qd2d, called by Kim with JhJc. Though ahead, Kim was left to settle for a runner up finish as the board 2hQc10h8c5s ran two pair for his opponent to finally knock him out.
