Godfather of Poker Doyle Brunson passes away at 89, leaving behind a lasting legacy

An icon in the world of poker, Doyle Brunson passed away at the age of 89 last Sunday, leaving behind an indelible mark on the game. His unparalleled skills, captivating personality, and immense contributions to the poker community have cemented his place as one of the most influential players of all time. As news of his death resonates through the poker world, players and fans mourn the loss of a true legend.

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson,his family said in a statement, posted on Twitter by Brian Balsbaugh, Brunson’s agent.He was a beloved Christian man, husband, father and grandfather. We’ll have more to say over the coming days as we honor his legacy. Please keep Doyle and our family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

The Texas native also known as “Texas Dolly”, dates his poker career all the way back to the 1950’s, extending seven decades and an impressive ten World Series of Poker titles later. In 1976 and 1977, Brunson achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the WSOP Main Event back-to-back, truly solidifying his status as a poker icon. His strategic prowess and aggressive playing style revolutionized the game, inspiring countless players to adopt his strategies. 

I’ve said this many times before, but it bears repeating: we don’t stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing,” said Brunson

Additionally, the longtime pro joined the globally renowned World Poker Tour’s lineup of ambassadors last June, leaving behind his duties under the brand. WPT CEO Adam Pliska offered a few kind words saying, “The World Poker Tour, much like the rest of the poker world, is deeply saddened by the passing of poker icon Doyle Brunson. We were honored to be able to call Doyle a WPT Ambassador but we were well aware that he was a longtime ambassador for the game as a whole. His legacy is one that will live on for decades as new generations of poker players come to learn about the legend that was Doyle Brunson. The WPT family sends our heartfelt condolences to his wife Louise, his son Todd, and his daughter Pamela.

Doyle Brunson was not only a master at the poker table but also an accomplished author.
