The 52nd World Series of Poker has provided plenty of thrilling stories as players continue to pursue the coveted bracelets. The past two days witnessed golden performances by four players. Shaun Deeb banked seven figures and his fifth career bracelet, Ben Yu captured his fourth, Nicholas Julia and Robert McMillan each locked up their first. Asian players Ka Kwan Lau, Steve Yea, and Abhinav Iyer also shined with strong finishes while recent bracelet winner Carlos Chang continued to run red hot as he advanced to the final day of the COLOSSUS event. Also advancing were India’s Abhishek Goindi and Korea’s Inkyu Choi. The arrival of poker legends Doyle Brunson and Sammy Farha sparked heaps of excitement as both came out for the Super Seniors event. In the WSOP Player of the Year race, the three leading players are very close in points. Anthony Zinno still holds the top spot and Jake Schwartz has overtaken Phil Hellmuth for second rank. With Deeb’s latest win, he zoomed to fourth rank. We’ve got those stories down below.

For those just tuning in, the series has been ongoing since September 30 at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino and will run through November 23. To date, 55 out of 88 bracelets have been won plus 5 out of 11 at online platform WSOP.com. The highly awaited $10,000 Main Event World Championship starts in just a few days with six starting heats running from November 4 to 9.

Event #52: $1,000 Seniors NLH Championship – ROBERT MCMILLAN – US$ 561,060

Huge turnout at Event #52: $1,000 Seniors NLH Championship with 5,404 entries across two starting days for a prize pool of US$ 4,809,560. This is currently the third largest field of the series, just exceeding the Millionaire Maker crowd. After five days of action, it was a dream victory for Robert McMillan who captured his first ever gold bracelet, first major title, and a career high score of US$ 561,060. In fact, this payout alone more than doubled his previous total earnings.

The final day opened with 16 remaining, Christopher Cummings was chip leader and held rank at the start of the final table. Eventual champion McMillan was second from the bottom with just a fourth of the leader’s stack, and the only WSOP decorated player was ring winner Louis Cheffy. By the fall of Cheffy in 7th place, there were plenty of changes in chip rank. Cummings was down to fifth position, McMillan was ranked third, and Robert Davis was in control with a sizable advantage. Davis went on to eliminate Dennis Jensen (6th) and Jonathan Ingalls (4th) to amass over half the chips in play. In between those two busts, Cummings fell to Daniel Stebbins in 5th place.

Three handed was rough on Davis and Stebbins while McMillan climbed. McMillan caught a lucky double up with AhQh nut flush against Davis’AsKd on a board 10h8h7h2d3d to take the lead. He then ousted Stebbins in 3rd place with a straight over trips. Ahead in the count for the title, McMillan quickly disposed of Davis but not before tanking on a board Qh2d8hKd. When McMillan called, he was ahead with Qc9c to Davis’4d4s, the river Ks sealed the big win.

Event #53: $25,000 High Roller PLO 8-Handed – SHAUN DEEB – US$ 1,251,860

After 11 cashes, Shaun Deeb finally clinched his fifth career bracelet at Event #53: $25,000 High Roller Pot Limit Omaha (8-Handed). Deeb outlasted a field of 212 entries, defeating Hong Kong player Ka Kwan Lau at heads up. Along with the gold, Deeb banked a massive US$ 1,251,860, which is currently the largest payout of the series. Back in 2018, Deeb won this same event for a career high score of US$ 1.4 Million. With his latest victory, Deeb climbed to fourth rank in the WSOP Player of the Year race. He now has US$ 6.3 Million in total WSOP earnings collected over 108 cashes.

With series achievements starting 2007, it wasn’t until 2015 did Deeb see the gold strapped on his wrist after winning the $10K Pot Limit Hold’em Championship. The following year he paired it up with a victory at the $1,500 Seven Card Stud. Three years later was a monumental year winning two more bracelets and the POY title.

For runner up Lau, it was the deepest result and largest payout for a player from Hong Kong in this series. The US$ 773,708 score was also Lau’s largest win. While this was the closest he has gotten to a bracelet, he does have a couple of high roller victories outside of the series.

Recapping Deeb’s fifth win, the big buy in event produced a prize pool of US$ 5,008,500 with the top 32 players paid. In addition to Deeb, reaching the final table were bracelet winners Tommy Le, David Benyamine, Ben Lamb, and John Beauprez. Other players were ring winner Maxx Coleman, Bulgaria’s Veselin Karakitukov who placed 5th at this event in 2016, Charles Sinn who finished runner up at the $1,500 Razz event, and Lau.

At the end of Day 3, Le’s third final table appearance ended in 9th place, Sinn dropped off 8th, Lamb out 7th, and Benyamine who was also on his third final table, took 6th. Entering the final day, Lau carried in the largest stack of 90 BB while Deeb was ranked fourth with 30 BB.

The first hand was an immediate double up for Deeb through Coleman. He then picked off Karakitukov in 5th place, followed later by Coleman (4th). The three handed match was a thrill for the fans as all three players – Deeb, Lau, John Beauprez – evened up and all three spent time up top. Lau began to decline fast, dropping to as low as 10 BB. As he recovered, Beauprez took his turn downhill and was soon cleaned out by Deeb to bring in a 3:1 advantage against Lau at heads up. Despite Lau’s efforts, he could not crack the big stack resulting in a second place finish with trips losing to Deeb’s full house.

Event #54: $2,500 Nine Game Mix 6-Handed – NICHOLAS JULIA – US$ 168,608

Another dream victory at the Rio with Nicholas Julia besting the 319 entry field of Event #54: $2,500 Nine Game Mix 6-Handed to lock up his first gold bracelet and a career high score of US$ 168,608. Julia outlasted a heads up grind against Kristan Lord to become the 34th first time winner of this series.

The event was the only one of its kind in the schedule with nine poker variants in rotation. Apart from the many usual suspects seen at the earlier mixed events was 2005 Main Event champion Joe Hachem who cashed out in 14th place. Other players missing the final table were Japan’s Tamon Namakura (22nd), and bracelet winner Naoya Kihara (28th).

The final table kicked off with three WSOP decorated players, namely 4x bracelet winner Robert Mizrachi who was on his third final table, bracelet winner/ quadruple ring winner Justin Liberto, and triple ring winner Aditya Prasetyo. Back for his second final table was Kenny Hsiung. The first big showdown was a three way that led to the fall of Hsiung 7th and Mizrachi 6th. Under the No Limit Hold’em variant, Hsiung was all in on the flop with a set, Mizrachi with a higher set, and eventual champion Julia with a straight that held. After the next three busts, Julia faced off against Lord, both players seeking the first major title of their career. Julia was ahead over 2:1. It was a slow grind to the finish as Lord caught up and overtook, however at Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, Lord began to decline while Julia amassed a 9:1 advantage. Julia closed it out under the Razz variant.

329 runners came out for a shot at the bracelet at Event #56: $10,000 6-Handed NL Hold’em Championship. After three days of exciting showdowns, multi-bracelet winner Ben Yu closed it out for his fourth career gold bracelet and a huge score of US$ 721,453. Also running deep was Joonhee “Steve” Yea who placed 5th, the deepest finish by a Korean player in this series. He collected a WSOP career high payout of US$ 137,303.

Taking a quick glance at the champion’s WSOP achievements, his first cash was in 2008 and his first bracelet was in 2015 at the $10,000 Limit Hold’em Championship. In 2017, Yu locked up his second gold at the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship, then in 2018 he banked a big one. Yu won the $50,000 No Limit Hold’em High Roller event for his third bracelet and a career high score of US$ 1,650,773. This was his largest win to date. Leading up to his latest triumph, Yu produced a whopping ten cashes before clinching it. His first payout was at Event #2: $25,000 H.O.R.S.E., where he placed 7th. He currently has US$ 5.3 Million in WSOP career earnings across 122 total cashes.

Recapping the action, midway through Day 2, portions of the US$ 3,067,925 prize pool were claimed, among the takers were bracelet winners Sung Joo Hyun (46th) and Niklas Astedt (26th). Jake Schwartz finished 45th to overtake Phil Hellmuth in the POY race. Entering Day 3, 19 players remained. Taiwan’s Joanne “JJ” Liu finished in 13th place and India’s bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer in 12th place. For Iyer, it was his third series cash. The final table was set with only two WSOP decorated players, Yu and 4x winner Asi Moshe.

Moshe was first to go followed by Yea, then Yu took the lead after eliminating Mike Sowers in 4th place. From there, Yu was unstoppable. He dusted both opponents, Ariel Mantel (3rd) and Nikita Kuznetsov (2nd), to rein in the fourth gold of his career.

The 10x bracelet winner Brunson didn’t make the cut into Day 2 however 3x winner Farha advanced as one of the 490 remaining players.

At the COLOSSUS event, after two starting days and Day 2, only 49 remained out of the enormous 9,399 field. Among them were recent bracelet winner Carlos Chang from Taiwan, India’s Abhishek Goindi, and Korea’s Inkyu Choi.
