Main Event

It was a huge day at the Main Event with 339 entries for Day 1C. After 14 rounds, only 85 survived with India’s Sumit Sapra at the helm bagging 310,500 in chips. Sapra was the only player to cross into this range. HIs closest competitor was Chauve Vincent with 263,000 and Tzu Chieh Lo with 250,000. We will have a recap for you shortly along with the chip count. For now, have a read on some of the action we caught in this heat.

Andy Li Xueyan had pocket kings, Minh Le had pocket nines, the board ran 3-8-9-8-K for a full house to both but Xueyan with the higher spread.

Tony Trieu picked up two pots to bring his stack to 230k. The first one he railed a player with pocket aces over pocket tens.

Next hand, Chih Ying Liang raised to 5500, called by two players until it reached Trieu who three-bet to 17.5k. Two players called, Liang and Cuong. At the flop J♠ 5♣ 7♦ , Trieu bet 25k and won the pot with no callers.

Lu Zheng Hao was on his second bullet today after falling to quads with his full house. He hoped his second attempt would be better, and he was faring well with over 100k until the last level sent him plummeting. He shared the hand with us. He opened to 5500 from hijack and bb defended. On the flop 3♥ Q♣ 6♦ , bb checked, Hao bet 4k, bb raised to 14k, Hao called. On the turn K♠ both checked and the river 2♥ completed the board. Bb bet 17k, Hao shoved his 60k, bb called with slightly less. Hao with 6♥ 6♠ set, bb with 4♣ 5♥ straight, Hao got chunked to 8k.

With 10k in the middle, three players stared down a flop Q♣ A♠ 3♠ . Sb checked, Tan Wah Meng bet 4500, Jin Yong folded, back to sb who shoved. Meng called. Sb K♠ 7♠ flush draw, Meng Q♦ J♦ mid pair. The turn A♥ and river 9♣ completed the board. Meng shipped it while sending one out in the process. Meng up to 180k.

Yet another loss for Jaewook Shin. This time it was Rex Clinkscales taking some. Clinkscales raised to 4500, Shin defended on the big blind. At the flop 9♠ 6♣ A♠ , Shin checked, Clinkscales bet 8500, Shin folded. Clinkscales up to 170k, Shin down to 130k.

An Joung Huk raised to 4500, Chih Ying Liang re-raised to 11k, Huk called. On the flop K♥ K♣ 5♥ , both checked and the dealer dropped 7♥ turn. Huk checked, Liang bet 10k, Huk shoved his 35k stack, and Liang snapped him off.

The river K♠ improved Liang to a roaring quads to take the lead and the pot. Huk busted. Liang up to 260k.

Jaewook Shin hasn’t won a hand that he’s raised preflop. Having lost two to Johannes Felix Hoeld, he lost another but bigger pot to Gabriel Carter. Action began with Shin raising to 4500 from utg, called by two players which included Carter on the big blind. At the flop 7♠ 3♠ Q♥ , Carter checked, Shin bet 6k, one player folded, back to Carter who called. On the K♥ turn, Carter checked, Shing bet 15k, Carter raised to 48.5k, Shin folded.

Utg KDI raised to 6k, mp Soo Jo Kim called, and joined by the button Dinh Xuan Dinh for a three-way look at the flop A♥ K♣ 5♥ . KDI bet 9k, called by both Kim and Dinh. On the turn 6♠ , KDI bet 20k, Kim shoved 40k, Dinh folded.

The river 2♦ ended the hand for a double up to KDI.

Johannes Felix Hoeld boosted his stack to 120k after winning three pots at his table in this new round. First pot saw cutoff Jaewook Shin raise to 4500, Hoeld shoved on the button, no call.

Next hand it was Shin again who raised to 4500, Hoeld three-bet to 13.5k, Shin folded. Third winning pot, Hoeld raised to 4500, one player called, another three-bet to 14.5k, called by both players. On the flop 4♦ 2♦ J♣ , action was checked to the aggressor, he bet 18.5k. Hoeld moved all in. No callers to claim the pot.

On a full board 8♦ 8♣ 4♠ 2♣ Q♦ and 55k weighing down the middle, Chih Ying Liang checked, Nguyen Hong Diep bet 20k, Liang tanked then made the call. It was a good one with Nguyen mucking. Liang claimed it without having to show. He now has 280k.

Piet Pape was already sporting a big stack when he claimed a beefy pot to zoom to 240k. The board was 8♠ 3♠ 4♦ 7♠ K♣ , around 50k brewed, bb Pape bet 22k, his opponent tanked then called. Pape showed 5♥ 6♣ straight to defeat Q♥ Q♦ .

Clearly one of the most decorated players here, Marvin Rettenmaier bet 16.6k on a board of 7♥ 8♥ 9♣ 9♠ T♣ with 32k already in the middle. He was called by Quoc Anh. Rettenmaier opened Q♦ 6♦ for a straight and claimed it. Anh held A♥ T♦ .

Action folded to the button Terry Gonzaga, he raised to 340. Big blind three-bet to 13.2k, Gonzaga four-bet to 33k, bb called. On the flop K♦ K♣ 7♦ , bb checked, Gonzaga fired 30k, bb tank-folded. Gonzaga climbed to 250k.

APT General Manager Lloyd Fontillas just sent us his bad beat against Stuart Brodie. Brodie shoved with J♣ J♥ , William Kang shoved with A♦ Q♣ , Fontillas on the bb shoved with A♠ A♥ . Around 100k collected. The board ran 8♥ T♣ 2♥ 9♠ Q♠ for a straight to Brodie. Fontillas down to 4k.

Mid position player Anson Wong raised to 2500, Jin Yong three-bet to 9k, Wong jammed for an additional 39.5k to Jin. He called. Wong A♦ Q♠ , Jin K♠ K♥ , the window card showed an ace with the board completing A♣ J♣ T♣ 8♠ T♦ .

Having just won a pot, Anh Nguyen proceeded to win two more. Big stacked player raised to 3k, called by button player and Anh Nguyen on the big blind. At the flop K♣ T♥ 2♥ , everyone checked. On the turn 6♣ , Anh bet 5k, called by the button. On the river A♣ it was checked by both, Anh won with Ax Kx .

Immediately following that win, he was in on a raised pot preflop to 17k. The board showed K♠ 2♦ K♦ . Sb Anh bet and before the count, his opponent folded to scoop it up. Anh up to 140k.

One of the WPT Japan honored players, Takagi Yosuke has just fallen. He was all in with A♣ 2♠ top pair on the flop A♦ 7♦ T♥ , but Andy Li Xueyan had T♠ T♣ set. The turn and river produced nothing for Yosuke and Li shipped it.

A player opened for 3k, Shashank Jain three-bet to 9100, June shoved with 42.2k, initial raiser folded, and Jain with the call. Jain T♣ T♦ , June J♦ J♥ . Though June was ahead, the board ran T♥ 6♥ 9♣ 8♣ 6♠ for a full house to Jain. June busted, Jain shipped it to reach 200k.

A pot of 25k was already in the middle and a full board of Q♣ 2♠ Q♠ J♥ 4♣ . Sb Thao Nguyen bet 5k, Marvin Rettenmaier shoved his 33k stack, Thao tanked. She eventually called then mucked after seeing Rettenmaier’s 2♥ 2♦ full house.

Two limpers in until Jaewook Shin raised to 5k. Limper Dinh Gia Hung called while the other limper folded. The flop ran A♥ 2♠ T♦ , checked by both. On the J♥ turn, Dinh checked, Shin bet 10k, Dinh raised to 30k, Shin tanked then folded.

Catching the action on a board 4♠ J♥ 9♠ J♠ and a hefty 20k already in the middle, Dishant bet 11.2k and button called. On the T♦ river, Dishant fired 17k, and got the call once more. Dishant revealed 4♥ 4♣ for a full house to win it against his opponent’s Q♠ 8♠ straight.

Nam Phuong raised to 2300 and found two callers in Le Tan Dung and Dung God. At the flop 8♣ 9♠ K♦ , God checked, Phuong c-bet 2200, Dung raised to 8200, God folded, called by Phuong. On the turn K♥ , Phuong checked to the aggressor Dung, he shoved his 120k big stack. Phuong did not flinch, he called with his 19.5 short stack.

On a flop 2♠ 5♣ 7♣ , Phan Hong Cuong checked, Nguyen Dang Toan bet 6500 onto a 16k pot. Cuong called. On the turn 5♥ , both checked and the river dropped 7♦ . Cuong led out for 6k, Toan raised to 15.5k, Cuong folded. Toan showed 8♣ 4♣ bluff.

Cutoff Quoc Anh raised to 2k, Thao Nguyen called from the button, bb Lu Zheng Hao joined in for a three-way look at the flop 7♠ 8♣ 6♣ . Hao checked, Anh c-bet 3k, Thao raised to 8k, Hao folded, and Anh called. On the K♠ turn and T♠ river, no bets landed. Thao showed 8♥ 8♠ set but Anh had her with 9♠ 7♥ straight.

On a turn board K♣ Q♦ 5♦ 2♣ , cutoff player tanked to Ron Tse’s all in. The clock was finally called and on the last second, it was called. Tse showed A♠ A♥ , cutoff with Q♠ 6♠ , the river 3♠ kept the aces ahead for a double up. Tse with 63k.

The lone female at table 9, Thao Nguyen, commanded the table for a couple of hands. Action began with Seitaro Aso raising to 1800, called by three players. On the flop J♥ 5♠ 7♣ , Thao bet 2k, this was followed by two folds, then a call by the button player. On the turn A♣ , Thao fired 3k, called again. Then on the river 8♣ , her 5k bet was good enough to win it with no challenge.

The next hand, utg Lu Zheng Hao raised to 2k, button Quoc Anh three-bet to 4200, sb Thao four-bet to 10k, no callers. Anh showed his A♠ . Thao showed kings.

Le Ngoc Khanh raised to 4500, Chul Ho Bae three-bet to 11k, Khanh all in with his ailing short stack which was less than Chul Ho’s raise. Khanh A♦ 8♣ , Chul Ho 9♠ 9♦ , the baord bricked for the pair to hold. Khanh eliminated.

This is the last level to enter the Main Event. Once Level 10 begins, that’s it.

Preflop action saw Antoine Ky raise to 1500 from utg+1, mp Han Wool Jang called. On the flop 6♣ T♠ J♣ , Ky bet 2500, Jang raised to 6k, Ky re-raised to 20k, Jang all in, and Ky all in with more chips.

The turn 6♦ and river K♦ completed the board. Jang busted. Ky rises to 80k.

Mp Jinhyo Yoo limped, Patrick B raised to 2k, sb Paul Hong called, Yoo called as well. The flop Q♦ 7♥ 9♦ , all checked. On the T♥ turn, check check, Patrick bet 3k. Hong called. On the river 4♦ , Hong bet 11k, Patrick called. Hong showed 7♦ 8♦ flush and claimed the pot.

With a packed house before us, it is a hunt to locate the chip leader. Looks like we found him. Jaewook Shin at a corner table sits with around 220k. We will keep tabs to see if that grows any further. We did manage to see him win one hand. Three player in on a raised pot preflop. The board 9♠ J♣ T♥ , Shin checked, a player checked, Vinh Nguyen bet 2100, Shin raised to 7k, no callers.

Everyone folded to the button KDI who raised to 1300. Acting next was sb Nguyen Thanh, he three-bet to 4200. KDI called. On the Q♥ T♣ 5♦ flop , Thanh led for 5k, KDI called. On the 5♥ turn, Thanh all in for 14.5k, called again by KDI. Thanh A♥ J♦ gutshot, KDI Q♦ 3♣ two pair, the river T♠ ended the hand and Thanh as well. KDI up to 90k.

Mid position raised to 1300 and found four callers to join at the flop Q♣ 6♠ 3♠ . Sb and bb checked, mp checked as well, cutoff Alex Lee all in for 9300, sb Roger Spets was his only caller. Lee Q♠ J♣ top pair, Spets Q♥ 8♥ , the turn 7♦ and river 9♦ ensured the double up for Lee. Spets dropped in chips and busted two hands after.

Utg Romit Advani raised to 12k, the blinds called. At the flop A♣ 7♠ 7♣ , blinds checked, Advani c-bet 3200, sb Vinh Huynh folded, bb Kai Loon raised to 7k, Advani folded.

Next hand, Loon three-bet from sb from 1200 to 4k and won the pot. Despite winning those two pots, he faced off with Advani again and lost quite a bit. From button, Loon limped, sb Advani raised to 1300, called by bb and Loon. On the flop 9♥ K♠ 7♥ and T♣ turn, no bets arrived. On the river 9♠ , Advani bet 2600, bb folded, Loon raised to 9k, Advani shoved. Loon folded.

On a raised pot preflop, the dealer spread 8♦ 6♠ 4♠ , bb Vinh Huynh bet 5k, cutoff Feng Zhao shoved, called by Vinh. Vinh Q♠ Q♥ overpair, Zhao A♠ 7♣ gutshot, the turn T♥ and river J♣ were no help to Zhao. Vinh doubled up.

Utg Lew Yin How raised to 1300, action folded around the orbit to the bb Alex Lee. He defended. At the flop 6♦ 9♥ 7♦ , Lee checked, Lew bet 1500, called by Lee. On the 8♣ turn, no bets landed and the dealer felted T♠ on the river. Taking the lead, Lee bet 6k, Lew raised to 22k, Lee tanked then folded.

Catching the action on a flop 7♣ 4♦ 2♣ and 5k in the pot, Hoang le bet 2k, Nguyen Chi Thinh raised to 5100, Y Chenxin called, and back to Hoang who also called. On the turn A♦ , action was checked to Chenxin, the shoved his 80k stack that well covered both of his opponents. Chenxin claimed the pot with both folding.

Utg Le Tan Dung limped, mp Harry Lim raised to 1500, sb called, and back to Dung with the call. At the flop J♥ 7♠ Q♦ , it was checked to Lim, he bet 2200, called by sb, raised by Dung to 10.2k, called only by Lim. On the turn 9♠ , Dung all in for 60k, Lim all in for 43k, and the hole cards were tabled.

Duy Ho will not be getting his picture taken just yet. He will have to get back in the game first then go the distance having just been bumped out by Tan Wah Meng. The hand kicked off with Kok Jun Yan raising to 700, called by one player, Duy three-bet 5k, Tan four-bet to 10.3k, Kok and the caller folded, Duy shoved his 15k stack. Tan called.

We have crossed into 600 entries combined… the screen shows 258 entries. Combine that with the past two starting days 347 total, we are at 605 entries. With 5 more levels to go before reg closes, we are looking in fine shape to exceed last year’s 679 entries and possibly even surpass WPT India’s 697 tour record for Asia.

During the first break of the day, WPT Event Manager Cathy Zhao, WPT Ambassador Barney Trouble, and WPT Live Events Consultant Danny McDonagh welcomed the players to the Main Event and expressed their gratitude to the Pro Poker Club owner Mr Long, Director Anh Nguyen, and WPT partner Denis Pham.

There’s always a thrill looking down at aces and while in position. That’s what went down here with Seongmin Han profiting. The hand began with utg Peter Nguyen raising to 500, called by mp player Tai, three-bet by cutoff Long Do to 2k, Seongmin four-bet to 7k on the button, Nguyen folded, Tai jammed his 26.5k stack, Long folded, and called by Seongmin.

Then on the river J♣ , Singh led for 10.3k, Nguyen shoved his 25k stack that covered Singh. Singh called.

Vinh 7♠ 7♣ set, Harach Q♦ Q♠ higher set, the river 6♦ completed the board and finished off Vinh. Harach up to 60k.

Michael Kim Falcon and Kjell Ove Dyb tangled in a previous pot that went to the latter for his straight. This time it was Falcon’s to scoop up the pot to bring his stack up to 70k.
