Mengdian Peng Surges to the Top as Poker Dream Main Event Nears Conclusion

With the money already secured, 140 players returned to Genting Highlands for Day 2 of Event #34: Main Event (MYR 4M Guaranteed), all with one goal in mind - surviving another day in pursuit of the Poker Dream Main Event title.

After nearly ten hours of play, the field was trimmed to just 16 hopefuls, with China's Mengdian Peng emerging as the man to catch after bagging a tournament-leading stack of 3,720,000.

Peng's ascent to the top came during the closing stages of the night. He first eliminated Bao Sheng Woon after improving to top pair with king-queen against ace-jack before delivering a knockout blow to Daryl Lim in one of the final hands of the evening in a flush over straight cooler.

Despite nearly $800,000 in live tournament earnings and a handful of Poker Dream final table appearances, Peng is still searching for his first PD title. Now, he finds himself in prime position to capture the most prestigious victory of them all - the Poker Dream Main Event title and Gold Dragon trophy.

Daniel Lim

Malaysia's Daniel Lim finished second with 3,155,000 after steadily building throughout the day. Among the key pots in his run were a massive three-barrel hand that forced Julian Warhurst off a sizable pot, an elimination of Eng Keat Ng, and a near two-million-chip pot won with a set against Tong Tan late in the evening.

Malaysia's Yong Heng Liau completed one of Day 2's biggest turnarounds, climbing from one of the shortest stacks after dinner to finish third with 3,040,000. His comeback began with a double through Joel Singam when ace-queen outdrew pocket tens. Later on, a huge cooler against Gagandeep Singh Malik saw both players river trip sevens, with Liau's ace-kicker playing to leave Malik short and propel Liau near the top of the leaderboard.

Several familiar names remain in contention heading into the final day, including Richard Darmawan (1,990,000), John Lee (1,650,000), Chuantao Sun (1,565,000), Shuang Li (1,350,000), Tong Tan (1,225,000), Wengang Wang (1,255,000), and Kon Hong Tang (1,100,000). Malik (930,000) will enter Day 3 as one of the shorter stacks, but still has a chance to best his sixth-place finish in the Main Event, which he achieved during Poker Dream 21 Malaysia.

Among the less fortunate who were eliminated during Day 2 were Poker Dream Super High Roller champion Yohei Kitazato, Snehil Aggarwal, Aaron Goh, Muk Pin Lai, Yang Yi Ang, and previous Poker Dream Main Event champion Zarvan Tumboli.

Everyone remaining is now guaranteed a payout of at least MYR 24,900 (~USD 6,225). However, the ultimate prize of MYR 660,000 (~USD 165,000) that accompanies the Gold Dragon trophy awaits the last player standing. Here's a look at the remaining payouts:

Remaining Main Event Payouts

The final 16 players will return tomorrow (August 3) at noon for the final day to play down to a winner. Play will resume with 14:21 remaining on the clock on Level 26, which features 25,000/50,000 blinds with a 50,000 big blind ante. Level lengths will be extended to 60 minutes each, with players getting sent on break after every two hours.

Mengidan Peng opened to 100,000 on the button and Daryl Lim defended his big blind.

Lim check-called a 100,000 bet from Peng on the J♦ 6♠ 5♦ flop, but then check-raised all in for about 500,000 facing a 150,000 barrel from Peng on the 2♦ turn. Peng called and a showdown was held.

Lim turned a straight, but Peng turned a flush to leave Lim drawing dead.

Shah proceeded to check-call a 60,000 bet from Lim on the 4♦ K♥ 3♥ flop, a 120,000 bet from Lim on the 6♥ turn, and finaly a 260,000 bet from Lim on the 7♦ river.

Lim tabled A♠ A♥ and Shah sent his cards into the muck.

At the other table, Tong Tan got all in preflop for about 800,000 from the big blind against Minh Tai Ha, who had Tan covered from the small blind.

Yong Heng Liau opened to 80,000 from early position and action folded to Gagandeep Singh Malik in the big blind, who flat-called.

The flop came 6♦ 4♦ 7♣ and Malik checked to Liau, who continued for 40,000. Malik put in a check-raise to 150,000 and after tanking for a while, Liau made the call.

The 7♠ peeled off on the turn and Malik led out for 350,000. Liau went back into the tank and flat-called once more.

On the K♥ river Malik went into the tank before he moved all in and had Liau covered. Liau snap-called.

Malik confidentially tabled 7♥ 3♥ for turned trips but he and the rest of the table were in shock to see Liau table A♦ 7♦ also for trips with a better kicker. Liau raked in the pot and Malik was left licking his wounds on under ten big blinds.

Yong Heng Liau Leads Final 140 Players Into Main Event Day 2

The journey to the final two tables has finally arrived in Event #34: Main Event ($4M GTD)! Following 12 starting flights, 140 players are all that remain of the initial 1,043 entrants who took their seat seeking Poker Dream glory. They will return to Genting Highlands today at noon for Day 2 and battle it out on the felt until just 16 players are left.

A new overall chipleader emerged last night in Yong Heng Liau, who bagged up a towering 590,000 in Day 1/K - good for 118 big blinds at the start of play today. Sitting just behind him is Yi Xuan Fong with 581,000, while Singapore's Tong Tan rounds out the podium spots with 557,000.

Start of Day 2 Top 10 Chip Counts

Liau, who appears to be relatively new to the poker tournament scene with just over $11,000 in earnings, will have a major opportunity to secure the biggest score of his career when play resumes today. However, the road ahead will not be easy, with a number of accomplished players close behind and plenty of experience among those still chasing the title.

Julian Warhurst is among the most recognizable names remaining with a big stack, returning with 490,000 chips. The Australian captured the Super High Roller title at Poker Dream 9 and will now look to add another major Poker Dream result to his resume, which includes over $1.3 million in earnings.

Also among the contenders are Shuang Li (516,000), who enters Day 2 fourth overall after emerging as the first Dream Bonus qualifier during the opening flights, Thailand's Apicha Dechacharoensiri (327,000), and India's Zarvan Tumboli (322,000), who previously captured the Main Event title in Poker Dream 8. Japan's Yohei Kitazato (275,000) will return with a healthy stack after just recently winning the Super High Roller title.

Seven players will return for Day 2 as Dream Bonus qualifiers, having secured additional prizes by bagging more than once. Li secured the largest payout as a result of his "bonus bag" containing a whopping 367,000 in chips!
