The first-ever Asia Cup made its debut at Poker Dream 23 Taiwan, marking a new collaboration between powerhouse brands: Poker Dream, Singapore Poker League, and Ace Poker League.

Played as a TWD 80,000 buy-in event at the festival, it drew 87 entries across 15 nations and generated a TWD 6,013,440 (~USD 188,600) prize pool.

When the final card was dealt, Malaysia's Barry Pang Kok Yong etched his name into PD history as the tournament's first champion. Pang defeated fellow Malaysian Jeremy Je Min Chan at heads up to capture the Silver Dragon trophy, the Asia Cup trophy, and the TWD 1,670,000 (~USD 52,400) top prize.

Final Day Recap

The two-day event, running on July 1-2, 2026 saw only 23 players return for the final day with only 14 of them guaranteed a payday. The day's entering chip leader, Leo Pang, couldn't match his Day 1 run to fall on soft bubble.

The money bubble itself lasted just a single hand with Horace Leung eliminated by Chen Chi Wing. Chen had been running hot since the start of the day and carried the momentum into the final table as chip leader.

Chip Leads Come and Go at Rapid Pace

However, it didn't take long for the tournament to remind everyone how quickly fortunes can change.

Chen's commanding run came to an abrupt end as three costly pots sent him crashing out on a cooler in 9th place. Tung Wing Wong briefly took control before Julian Warhurst enjoyed his turn at the top, while the six-handed stage settled into an intense battle of patience.

With blinds increasing, the stacks grew increasingly shallow, delaying the next elimination for nearly three hours until the average stack had fallen to just 14 big blinds.

Chan Surges

At this point, short stack specialist Jeremy Chan began his ascent.

After surviving a showdown against Warhurst with a fortunate river ace, Chan caught fire.

He eliminated Warhurst in 6th place and Apicha Dechacharoensiri in 5th place, building a stack that accounted for nearly 70 percent of the chips in play.

Pang Turns Survival Into Triumph

Chan's biggest nemesis was Pang Kok Yong. Twice, Pang found himself all in at risk, and twice he doubled through Chan to stay alive. He then eliminated Alex Kai in 3rd place, and entered an all-Malaysian heads up duel. Chan was ahead 22 big blinds to Pang's 19 big blinds.

From there, the momentum shifted for the final time. Pang edged in front before widening his lead when his full house extracted value.

With Chan in desperation mode, he shoved with ace-queen and was called by Pang’s ace-eight. The river brought an eight to deliver the decisive bad beat, ending the tournament and crowning Pang the inaugural Asia Cup champion.

Malaysia's Pang Kok Yong survived a grueling final table, two near-elimination moments, and spiked a miracle river card to claim the PD23 Taiwan Asia Cup title! He was awarded the PD Silver Dragon Trophy, the Asia Cup trophy, and TWD 1,670,000 (~USD 52,000) in prize money.

Jeremy Chan was on the brink of a double up. All in with A♠ Q♦ against Pang Kok Yong's A♦ 8♦. The flop and turn offered Pang no help whatsoever, T♣ 3♠ 2♠ 3♣, leaving him with just three outs to take down Chan and clinch the title.

Then the miracle. A shocking 8♥ fell on the river to eliminate Chan in 2nd place.

For Chan, the pain of the moment was all too familiar. Just two days earlier, he had suffered a brutal bad beat heads-up at the Super High Roller to finish in 2nd place. Despite the double heartbreak, it was an impressive finish for Chan with back-to-back deep runs at the festival's biggest events.

From hero to zero, Chen Chi Wing crashed out first at the final table, finishing in 9th place. Before doing so, he entered the final table as chip leader, sitting on 64 big blinds, until a succession of hits whittled his stack down to just 18 big blinds, then a cooler put an end to his run entirely.

The hand opened with a min-raise from Warhurst at under the gun and after everyone folded around to the small blind Chen, he three-bet to 300,000. Warhurst called to take the action to the flop.

Both players checked the J♥ 9♥ 2♣ flop then Chen resumed for 325,000 on the turn 8♣. Warhurst called and the river was 5♠.

Entering the day with 40 big blinds, Chen Chi Wing bumped it up in a hand against Apicha Dechacharoensiri who three-bet on the big blind to 70,000. Chen defended his open to go postflop.

On a flop of 9♠ 8♣ 6♠, Dechacharoensiri checked to Chen who tested with a 30,000 bet and they went to the turn after Dechacharoensiri tossed it in.

Both players opted to check the A♠ for a free river card J♠. Dechacharoensiri checked again, Chen wanted to get more value and slid out 85,000. Dechacharoensiri paid to see and then mucked when Chen revealed the nut flush K♠ T♦.

The Final Day of the Poker Dream 23 Taiwan #37 Asia Cup (Sponsored by SPL & APL) gets underway today at 12:00, with 23 players returning to the Win Win Poker felt. Each player remains in contention for one of the 14 paid places as they battle for a share of the prize pool and a shot at the Asia Cup championship.

Action starts at level 14, with a 10,000/15,000 bb ante. Each level will last 40 minutes with 15-minute breaks every three levels before level 26.
