Cao outlasted a stacked international field of 1,472 before defeating Hong Kong's Chun Yin Lau in an entertaining heads-up battle to capture the coveted Main Event trophy and the series' biggest prize.

Cao entered the final table in a strong position and maintained his composure as the field gradually thinned. Along the way, several notable contenders saw their title hopes end, leaving Cao and Lau to battle for the championship.

Heads-up play began with the two finalists on relatively even footing, with Lau slowly getting the lead before Cao seized control before the break. Lau, however, refused to go quietly, surviving two elimination hands to mount an impressive comeback and briefly threaten to turn the match around. The resilience set the stage for a tense finale as both players exchanged blows with the title hanging in the balance.

Competitive Background

Ngoc Anh Cao entered Poker Dream 23 Taiwan on the back of a consistent 2026 campaign across Asia's major poker tours. He opened the year in February with a career-best result at WPT Cambodia, finishing sixth in the USD 5,000 High Roller for USD 18,874. In March, he added another notable score by placing ninth in the Royal Poker Tournament Championship II in Hanoi, worth USD 8,731.

In April, Cao collected multiple cashes at the Red Dragon Poker Tour Plus Jeju before traveling to APT Taipei 2026, where he recorded two more deep runs, including a 31st-place finish in the Zodiac Classic for USD 6,422 and a Main Event cash. Those steady performances throughout the season culminated in his biggest achievement of capturing the Poker Dream 23 Taiwan Main Event title.

When asked what he would do with the prize money, he said that he would use it to enter more live poker events.

After three days of intense competition, Vietnam's Ngoc Anh Cao emerged as the Poker Dream 23 Taiwan Main Event champion, overcoming a hard-fought final table and a resilient heads-up opponent to capture the title. Throughout the final day, Cao displayed remarkable composure, a quality he later explained stemmed from years of experience and a mindset focused on accepting whatever the game brings.

Speaking through a translated interview with Poker Dream host Veronica after his victory, Cao shared that he deliberately avoided overthinking during crucial moments. Rather than dwelling on pressure or possible outcomes, he explained that he tried to make the best decisions he could and accept the results, whatever they were. That approach became the foundation of his strategy throughout both the final table and the heads-up battle.

Setbacks

Although Cao entered the final table as the chip leader, he admitted it was far from an easy path to the title. Several short stacks repeatedly doubled up, preventing him from extending his advantage. The toughest stretch came during heads-up play, when his opponent went on consecutive double-ups, raising genuine concern that the momentum might shift completely.

Despite facing a partisan rail that loudly supported his opponent, Cao said he never found the atmosphere discouraging. Instead, hearing the cheers gave him even more motivation to finish the job. He remarked that it's natural for family and friends to support a player during heads-up play, and every celebration from the opposing rail only strengthened his determination to win.

Experience

Behind the championship lies a wealth of experience. Cao has been playing poker for approximately 20 years, including 11 years as a professional, and is currently 14th on the Vietnam all-time money list. However, that might change once the Poker Dream 23 Taiwan results are officially out.

The victory also marked Cao's first appearance at Poker Dream Taiwan, despite having visited Taiwan several times before. He described the trip as smooth from the beginning, noting that the journey was quick, easy, and comfortable; so he enjoyed his overall experience at the festival.

Twice during heads-up play, it looked as though the momentum was about to swing back in Chun Yin Lau's favor. The first came when Ngoc Anh Cao moved all in from the button and Lau quickly called from the big blind.

In just one-and-a half hour of final day play, the PD23 Taiwan Main Event went from 16 players to the Final 9. The finalists are now one step away from the Golden Dragon and the TWD 5,263,000 (~USD 164,600) top prize.

Leading the race into the final table is Vietnam's Ngoc Anh Cao, who wasted no time stamping his authority on the day. Starting with the biggest stack at his table, Cao went to work immediately - stealing blinds and antes. He sniffed out Netnapit Muksatean's bluff, then topped it all off by eliminating Wai Kit Law in 11th place to effectively double his entering stack.

At Cao's heels are Ting Chieh Chi and PD Taiwan defending champion Peng Sen Wu with nearly identical in stacks. While Chi entered the day as the leader, Wu eliminated Jian Yang Teh in 14th place to briefly claim the top spot.

Also rising during the first hour was lone Filipino contender, Jonard Arcilla, who eliminated Chi Ho Lai in 13th place.

The hands that came before

Donghyun Kim came into the Main Event Final Day with the fewest chips. However, in both situations, he has emerged victorious, which leads one to wonder if he has a contract with the poker gods to grant him favors.

With a little over two big blinds remaining, Donghyun Kim shoved all in from the big blind after Charles Tsai completed from the small blind, leaving Kim at risk for his tournament life.

PD23 Taiwan Main Event Final Day Is Here, Who Will Slay the Dragon?

Today is the day!

From a record field of 1,472 entries that generated a historic TWD 30,038,688 (~USD 940,000) prize pool - the largest for Poker Dream Taiwan Main Event - just 16 players remain in the hunt for the coveted Poker Dream Golden Dragon Trophy.

Every returning player has already secured TWD 229,500, but all eyes are on the championship prize of TWD 5,263,000 (~USD 165,000) awaiting the last player standing.

Cards get back in the air at 12:00 with blinds resuming at 50,000/100,000 ante 100,000, and 39:28 remaining in the level. From there, blinds will continue to increase every 60 minutes. The average stack currently sits at just 23 big blinds.

Ting Chieh Chi

Leading the field is Ting Chieh Chi, one of Taiwan's most accomplished tournament regulars. Chi begins the final day with 50 big blinds, giving him more than double the average stack.

Peng Sen Wu

The player everyone is watching is the PD Taiwan Main Event defending champion, Peng Sen Wu, the only remaining player who has

previously captured a PD Main Event title. He enters with 40 big blinds.

Netnapit Muksatean

Two women remain in contention. Wan Ying So continues her impressive run, while Netnapit Muksatean has more than just the Main Event title to play for. Currently running third in the Ladies Player of the Series standings, the Thai contender is poised to leap into the top spot with her Main Event finish, putting her in prime position to claim the inaugural title.

Ngoc Anh Cao

Vietnam's lone remaining representative is seasoned pro Ngoc Anh Cao, whose deep run carries added significance. A final table finish would push the accomplished Vietnamese professional beyond the USD 1 million mark in live tournament earnings according to The Hendon Mob, adding another milestone to an already decorated career.

Charles Tsai

Two players from Australia are in the mix and looking to become the first players from their country to hoist the dragon. Charles Tsai, ranked second with 42 big blinds, has been one of the most consistent performers throughout the tournament,and Tom Maguire who has a a string of successes in the region since last year. He enters 24 big blinds.

Chi Ho Lai

Hong Kong boasts the strongest contingent with four players still in contention, led by Chi Ho Lai, who found redemption against Donghyun Kim just before the end of Day 2. He returns with 30 big blinds.

For Kim, he remains South Korea’s lone representative and faces a steep climb back into contention, sitting on just 3 big blinds.

Jonard Arcilla

Lone flag flyers, the Philippines is represented by Jonard Arcilla, who is making his international debut in Taiwan and enters with 24 big blinds.

Malaysia’s hopes rest with Jiang Yang Teh on 15 big blinds, while Indonesia’s Rudy Halim enters with just 6 big blinds. Halim already owns a dragon for his victory at the PD 18 Malaysia High Roller event.
