Yukinori Kojima has mounted an impressive comeback to win the APPT Korea Super High Roller at Paradise City Resort, overcoming a 27-entry field and defeating Kotaro Kurotaki heads-up in a back-and-forth battle to claim KRW 95,534,000 (~USD 70,782) and his first major poker title.
Kojima entered the final day as one of the shorter stacks with under 20 big blinds, while Kurotaki came in with the second-largest stack with over 50 big blinds at the start of play.
Kurotaki would go on to dominate much of the early action, eliminating player after player and building a commanding stack, but Kojima steadily fought his way back into contention with a little luck and well-timed aggression.
By the time the two were heads-up, Kojima was within 10 big blinds of Kurotaki and they would go on to play for nearly two-and-a-half hours before Kojima was able to secure victory.
"The heads-up play went on for a very long time, and my opponent was truly strong, so I'm honestly very happy,” Kojima said through the use of a translator. “It took me a year (of trying) to win this title. I'm filled with really happy feelings.”
Kojima said the victory will not change his approach to the game, with his sights simply set on continuing to test himself in major tournaments.
“Regarding whether this victory will bring any changes to my future poker career, there isn't anything in particular; I just want to keep challenging myself in big tournaments going forward.”
