APPT Manila News: Florencio Campomanes Wins APPT Open; Martin Gonzales Tops Red Dragon Day 1B

Another action-packed day at premier live series Asia Pacific Poker Tour with games taking place at the stunning Cove at Okada Manila. Kicking off on July 24, APPT Manila is now five days in. Turnout has been increasing daily as witnessed at the ongoing key events and side events.

Up on the plate for the past two days were the APPT National and the return of the PokerStars Red Dragon. Both events offering substantial guarantees. The APPT National concluded its second of three flights, and the PokerStars Red Dragon Day 1B closed with 261 entries.

Grabbing the headlines was the APPT Open where one of the Philippines’ top players emerged victorious in a thrilling final table race. We’ve got those stories.

Florencio Campomanes stole the spotlight after defeating Anastasios Pavlou at heads up of the APPT Open. As the most highly decorated PokerStars champion in the lineup, with two brand majors under his belt, Campomanes came from behind to claim the title, the shard trophy, and a payout of PHP 3,880,000 (~USD 66,324).

The APPT Open ran from July 25 to 28 with three flights generating a 326 entry field. The money bubble burst on Day 2 then bagged up at the final 9 players. Leading the hunt was Anastasios Pavlou who maintained his commanding presence, eliminating Benjamin Mangaliman (8th), Edgar Asehan (6th), John Costiniano (5th), and Seonghun Jeong (3rd). Campomanes also kept his stack healthy, knocking out two players, Jason Magbanua (9h) and Benjamin Ebarle (7th).

At heads up, Pavlou led with 97 bb to Campomanes’ 25 bb. With a rail in full support for the local hero, Campomanes landed two double ups that switched the standings. From then on, Campomanes never relinquished and defeated Pavlou with Ad8d over KsJd.

In addition to the cash prize, both finalists received an APPT Championship package worth PHP 200,000.

The PokerStars Red Dragon made its grand return with a PHP 25 Million guarantee in tow. The beloved event may have a different structure than its original freezeout format however it still attracted a big crowd looking to hoist the iconic trophy.

The event opened with 104 entries and  for its second and final entry day, a larger 261 turned up for 365 in total. 55 players advanced to Day 2 and will have a shot at the enormous pot. Bringing in the largest stack is Filipino Martin Gonzales who bagged up 586,000, equivalent to a towering 146 bb entering the final day. Other notable survivors of Day 1B were Victor Chong, Lester Edoc, David Erquiaga. and Dhaval Mudgal.

Day 1B of the APPT National added 100 entries to bring up the current tally to 180 entries. There is still one flight left to jump in this event which features a PHP 20 Million (~USD 342,270 guarantee. At Day 1B, Taiwan’s Mu Ze Li topped the counts trailed closely by Filipino ace Mike Takayama and Irvan Iliadi to round out the top three.
