2021 WSOP: Mikita Badziakouski banks $1.4M & first career bracelet; Leo Margets and Michael McCauley win firsts; Neel Joshi places 3rd

It’s down to the wire at the 52nd Annual World Series of Poker with three more bracelets claimed. The newly minted were all first time winners. Belarusian pro Mikita Badziakouski secured a series first victory for his country and pocketed over US$ 1.4 Million, Leo Margets became the second Spanish player to win and the first woman to do so at an open event, and a dream gold for newcomer Michael McCauley at the Super Turbo event. Among the Asians running deep was India’s Neel Joshi with a 3rd place finish.

As it stands, there are only two bracelets left on the live front and two at online WSOP.com. Updated list of winners can be found down below including various series figures and player achievements. At the WSOP Player of the Year race, frontrunner Josh Arieh widened his lead, Phil Hellmuth is ranked second, and a late surge by Daniel Negreanu sent him two notches up into third position. Arieh also tied Hellmuth with the most final tables at seven each.

Event #85: $50,000 High Roller NL Hold’em – MIKITA BADZIAKOUSKI – US$ 1,462,043

Four years ago, Belarusian superstar Mikita Badziakouski placed 3rd at the WSOP Europe €111,111 High Roller for One Drop NLH event for a series high score of €1,521,312. Last night, he scored another WSOP seven figure payout of US$ 1,462,043 and his first ever gold bracelet for his big win at Event #85: $50,000 High Roller NL Hold’em. Badziakouski outlasted fellow elite players that included Daniel Negreanu in 3rd place and Ren Lin at victory’s door. This was only his second cash in this series with a 5th place finish at the earlier $25K Heads Up NLH Championship.

While this achievement has boosted his total series earnings to over US$ 4 Million, Badziakouski has an even larger US$ 26 Million collected at various live events around the world. Among his numerous seven digit payouts was a massive score of HK$ 41,250,000 (~US$ 5,257,027) earned at the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Main Event in Jeju. With his long list of live cashes earned consistently every year since 2010, it was just a matter of time before he captured that first bracelet.

The second to the last high roller event of the series attracted 113 entries for a substantial prize pool of US$ 5,409,875. Out of the 17 players in the money, nine of them were at the final table with five on their fourth appearance. At four handed, Jason Koon fell to Badziakouski and was followed by Negreanu in 3rd place. This was another deep run by Negreanu who also placed 3rd at the recently concluded $50K High Roller PLO event. The Canadian pro moved up two notches in the WSOP POY race into 3rd rank. Badziakouski’s last hurdle was Ren Lin who went pound for pound against the Belarusian to overcome a 4:1 deficit. Lin proceeded to overturn the count to nearly 4:1 but still couldn’t pull in the win. Badziakouski recovered and grinded to over 6:1 in chips when the golden victory hand arrived. Right after the win, Badziakouski jumped in the last high roller event, the $100K High Roller No Limit Hold’em, and bagged up half the starting stack which was roughly 100 BB.

Event #83: $1,500 The Closer NLH – LEO MARGETS – US$ 376,850

It took nearly the entire series to get there but it was finally achieved! The first female player at an open event was crowned after Spanish pro Leo Margets took down Event #83: $1,500 The Closer No Limit Hold’em. Margets was awarded her first ever bracelet and a career high US$ 376,850 payout. She followed in the footsteps of fellow countryman Adrian Mateos, becoming the second Spanish player in this series to claim the gold. Among her series achievements, Margets’ 17 cashes include a US$ 352,832 score at the 2009 Main Event for 27th place, and nearly a gold at the 2018 $1,000 Double Stack NLH, falling in 2nd place for US$ 123,297. With her latest win, her total WSOP earnings boosted to US$ 935K.

In Margets’ pursuit of The Closer gold, she had to overcame a rough final table that included bracelet winner Stephen Song and 2x winner Chris Moorman. Also at the table were Cherish Andrews and Benjamin Underwood, both back at the finals for their second appearance. The fiercest contender was Alex Kulev who carried in the largest stack into Day 2 and into the final table.

Recapping the race, Margets was running third in chips. Action was dominated by the chip leader as he railroaded five players that included a double bust to Marc Lange (4th) and Arturo Segura (5th). At heads up Kulev had 66 BB to Margets 11 BB but at this point he could not close it down. Instead, Margets doubled up with a lucky 9c4d to Kulev’s As9s, and from there, the winning momentum carried to overtake Kulev and cripple him with Qs5s trips fives over Ah9d pair on a board 9s5d3s5c10h. She went on to ship it, becoming the first woman to win an open event at the ongoing series.

The three day event attracted 1,903 across two entry days. 13 Asian players reached the money namely, Wooram Cho (16th), Kartik Ved (41st), Minkyun Kim (44th), Yutaro Tsugaru (80th), Kalyan Cheekuri (117th), Ting Yi “Eric” Tsai (123rd), Neel Joshi (129th), Hayato Kitajima (130th), Sriharsha Doddapaneni (157th), Jun Obara (218th), Takashi Ogura (241st), Koki Kudo (259th), and Muskan Sethi (270th).

The one day fast paced Event #86: $1,000 Super Turbo NL Hold’em drew 1,025 entries for a prize pool of US$ 912,250. Seven Asian players reached the money with India’s Neel Joshi going the farthest in 3rd place. Knocking out half the players at the final table was newcomer Michael McCauley to secure his first bracelet and career high payout of US$ 161,384.

Among the players at the final table was 4x bracelet winner / two time series winner Josh Arieh who was on his seventh appearance. This tied him with Phil Hellmuth in the most final tables. Arieh finished 10th which helped maintain his lead in the WSOP POY race. Another decorated player was 2x bracelet winner Yuval Bronshtein who was on his third final table.

Leading up to his victory, McCauley delivered a double knockout to Filippo Ragone (6th) and Luigi Curcio (6th) with AdKs straight dusting QsJc brick and 10h10s overpair on a board 8h3d2h4s5s. He went on to eliminate Bronshtein (4th) then Joshi (3rd) to go head to head against Andrew Wilson who also cleaned out a few players of his own. McCauley kicked off with the lead, Wilson managed to double up, but on the next shove, it was McCauley with the winning hand to capture the coveted bracelet and the glory of winning on his first ever visit

Other Asian players in the money: Takaaki Hagiwara (14th), Shunsuke Igarashi (35th), Jongwook Lee (75th), Kawaguchi Akihiro (98th), Carlos Chang (104th), Ye Yuan (138th),
