2021 WSOP final festival highlights: Josh Arieh wins WSOP Player of the Year; Inspiring performances; Over $231M paid out

After 54 days of thrilling action, the 52nd Annual World Series of Poker has come to an end. 88 bracelets were awarded at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino and eleven at online platform WSOP.com. Here’s a look at some of the festival highlights, top performances, series numbers, and player achievements. 

Josh Arieh wins WSOP Player of Year

Hot race for the WSOP Player of the Year title as it came down to the final day with three players in contention. In the end, Josh Arieh maintained his lead to become the newest winner. He accrued 4,194.59 points across 11 series cashes. For his achievement, Arieh was awarded US$ 15,000. Here are his final table runs:

Entering the series, Arieh had two bracelets under his belt with the first one won back in 1999 and the second in 2005. After a fifteen year gold drought, he finally locked up his third and fourth this year. He also reached five other final tables to match up with Phil Hellmuth with an incredible seven final tables each. After Hellmuth and Ben Yu failed to gain the points needed to overtake Arieh, the WSOP released the official announcement of his win. Arieh tweeted, 

“Holy shit! I can’t believe this really happened! I fkn won WSOP POY… what in the actual fuck!” 

Speaking of Hellmuth, the “Poker Brat” placed 2nd in the POY race with 3,720.01 points. Halfway through the series, Hellmuth was the frontrunner with five final tables which included a win at variant No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, one he had been chasing his entire career. This earned him his 16th career bracelet. During the final half of the games, his lead vanished as he was overtaken by several players, including Arieh, and dropping to as low as 14th rank. With only 11 events remaining, Hellmuth zoomed back up into second position after reaching his sixth final table, and nearly had the POY title but fell short in 2nd place at Event #84: $50,000 High Roller Pot Limit Omaha. For Hellmuth’s fantastic run, he was awarded US$ 7,500. Here are his final table runs:

Second again, sigh…I officially finished 2nd in @WSOP “Player of the Year” for FOURTH time. I’m feeling really down. I’m aware that I had a really good WSOP, but only 1 bracelet…I’m aware that second place 4x in POY is a testament. But, I can’t see the forest through the trees

Finishing 3rd in the race with 3,531.03 points was Daniel Negreanu whose late game surge sent him skyrocketing from 16th rank. Up until the last few days of the series, Negreanu only had two final tables of 8th place each then landed two 3rd place high roller finishes to end the series strong. He earned US$ 2,500. Scott Ball wins No Limits Velo

This year’s series introduced the No Limits Velo Leaderboard dedicated only to players’ performances at No Limit Hold’em. Two time winner Scott Ball came out on top with 2,863.11 points to claim the title and US$ 15,000 first prize. Ball won Event #25: $5,000 6-Handed NL Hold’em and Event #68: $1,111 Little One for One Drop NL Hold’em and cashed at six other NLH events. Earning 2nd place was Koray Aldemir with 2,670.11 points. Aldemir shipped the Main Event and cashed at nine other NLH events to claim the US$ 7,500 prize. In third was newcomer Cole Ferraro with 2,606.61 points. Ferraro finished runner up at Event #26: $1,000 Freezeout NL Hold’em then snagged his first bracelet at Event #61: $600 Deepstack Championship NL Hold’em. He also cashed at five other NLH events. 

2021 WSOP tally

Despite having to run the 2021 WSOP during a pandemic, with vaccination required and third country stays compulsory for many international travelers, thousands still descended upon the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino resulting in impressive fields and hefty payouts. The series amassed a combined US$ 231M+ in live and online prize pools. Here’s a look at the series turnout.

Three-peat Adam Friedman makes history

Adam Friedman became the first player in series history to achieve a three-peat in the same event. The 2x reigning champion of the $10,000 Dealer’s Choice 6-Handed Championship event won it in back-to-back years of 2018 and 2019, and set out for his third consecutive. Once again, Friedman successfully defended his title, outlasting a field of 93 entries, and defeating Phil Hellmuth at heads up.

Koray Aldemir wins the Main Event

The most envied player at the series was none other than German pro Koray Aldemir who carved his name in poker history after outlasting the 6,650 player field of the $10,000 Main Event No Limit Hold’em World Championship. This was Aldemir’s first ever WSOP win. Along with the championship gold bracelet, he won a massive career high payout of US$ 8,000,000. In addition to the champion, the eight other players down the rung also pocketed seven figures. 

Michael Addamo banks two high roller events

Considered by many as the best No Limit Hold’em player today, Australian pro Michael Addamo was the only player to win two High Roller events in the series. He first shipped Event #38: $50,000 High Roller NLH 8-Handed for his third career bracelet and US$ 1,132,968, then to close out the series, he took down Event #87: $100,000 High Roller NL Hold’em for US$ 1,958,569 and his fourth career bracelet. Addamo earned a combined US$ 3,091,537.

Inspiring women at the series

While the number of women in poker is significantly less than the number of men, they are still very fierce contenders. At this year’s series, several women stood out. First on our list is Spain’s Leo Margets who was the only woman to win an open entry event. Margets outlasted the 1,903 entry field of Event #83: $1,500 The Closer – NL Hold’em for a sizable score of US$ 376,850 and her first career bracelet. Another woman making waves was mixed player Carol Fuchs who reached two final tables – 4th at Event #36: $10,000 Dealer’s Choice 6-Handed Championship and 6th at Event #69: $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better. Third woman on our list is Lara Eisenberg who bested a field of 644 entries at Event #22: $1,000 LADIES No Limit Hold’em Championship. And lastly, Joanne “JJ” Liu who cashed at a whopping 11 events. 

Two series wins – 6 players

Winning one bracelet at the series is difficult enough but winning two is just beyond outstanding. Six players accomplished this difficult task. Though not listed, other players coming close to joining this exclusive group were Phil Hellmuth, Connor Drinan, Benny Glaser, Tommy Le, Ryan Leng, and Cole Ferraro, each with one win and one runner up. Actually, Hellmuth and Leng had two chances as both had two runner up finishes.

2022 WSOP schedule and move to Bally’s and Paris Casino Las Vegas

After nearly two decades of calling the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino home, the annual series will relocate to Bally’s and Paris Casino Las Vegas starting next year. The official announcement was made at the Main Event final table kick off. Also announced was the 2022 WSOP schedule which will see the games resume back to its summer slot from May 30 to July 19 with actor Vince Vaughn as master of ceremonies. Through the years, the halls of the Rio have minted hundreds of players including 17 Main Event champions.
