Last month, the World Poker Tour announced the opening half schedule of Season XX which included a first time visit to the beautiful city of Sydney, Australia. News of that event sparked plenty of excitement on social media, and earlier today, the globally renowned brand added more to the thrill revealing full details of that upcoming event along with two scheduled stops to follow at The Star Gold Coast in Queensland. In the announcement, WPT CEO Adam Pliska expressed,
“Poker players in Australia have always been passionate about the game and the partnership with The Star Entertainment Group allows us to expand our presence there. Hosting the first WPT event at The Star Sydney puts us front and center in the largest poker market in Australia, one of the most iconic cities of the world, adding another element to our 20th anniversary celebration.”
The inaugural WPTDeepStacks Sydney will take place at The Star Sydney from March 30 to April 11 with 12 tournaments showcased over thirteen days. Buy ins range from A$ 330 to the highest of A$ 5,000. The festival’s crown jewel is the A$ 1,500 buy in WPTDeepStacks Main Event which runs for five days from April 7 to 11. Three starting flights are scheduled with unlimited re-entries. Other tournaments lined up are the Opening Event A$ 750 buy in, the A$ 1,100 NLH Freezeout, the A$ 2K NLH, Bounty, Megastack, Super Turbo, PLO, and for high stakes players, the A$ 5K Challenge which is the most expensive event of the series. The Star Sydney Chief Operating Officer, Damian Quayle shared,
“The Star is the home of poker in Australia, and we are thrilled with our partnership with WPT to host this globally-recognised tournament for the first time ever in Sydney. With the WPT celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, this event will be the first time that WPT sets a footprint in Sydney. This looks set to be the biggest ever staged in Asia Pacific and with the world’s best players here to compete, Sydney and The Star will be showcased as one of the best vacation playgrounds in the world”.
Following that event are two stops at The Star Gold Coast, one of which is a Main Tour stop. Details of those events have yet to be released but players should be on the lookout as it has proven to attract the largest crowd in the region.

Tricia David
Tricia David has long experience as a recreational poker player and has been covering poker events since 2010 for numerous outfits in Asia. She spent one year working part time with Poker Portal Asia then became editor and lead writer for all event coverage of the Philippine Poker Tour (PPT).
