Mongolia has gone through a major legal change in its gambling laws, which has effectively ended its role as a regional poker destination. While there were earlier efforts to recognize poker as a “mind sport,” new legislation now places a full ban on all forms of paid betting and poker across the country.

Mongolia: The 2026 Gambling Ban

• The Total Prohibition: On May 30, 2025, the Mongolian Parliament (State Great Hural) passed sweeping legislative amendments that fully prohibit all forms of paid gambling, including online poker, sports betting, and paid lotteries.
• Criminal Liability: Organizing or participating in unauthorized gambling is now a criminal offense under the Criminal Code. Operators and intermediaries can face fines, community service, and prison terms ranging from six months to three years.
• Advertising Ban: The 2025 law strictly forbids any gambling-related advertising, including digital ads, influencer marketing, and event sponsorships.
• Economic Impact: The government has repealed all previous tax provisions that recognized gambling as a legitimate business activity, requiring all remaining licensed businesses to close immediately.

Status of Poker Festivals

Due to the 2025 total ban, the festivals previously associated with Mongolia no longer legally operate within the country:

• Ulaanbaatar Clubs: Former hubs such as Asem Villa and Montexas Poker Club have had to cease real-money poker operations to avoid criminal prosecution under the new laws.
